How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a cute game with funny dialogue and clever puzzles that are interspersed with great mini-games that draw you into the story world at every turn.”

“Seven Sirens is another great addition to the Shantae series. It takes what prior games did right and expands on them, introducing new abilities, a cool new card mechanic, and fleshing out the game world at the same time. Sure, it may not be as good as its predecessor Half-Genie Hero considering that it was designed for mobile platforms first, but it’s a solid action platformer all things considered and one I would recommend, even to those that have not touched the series before.”

“Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a summer adventure designed for children and casual players, offering a simple but interesting gameplay, nice cartoon graphics and a large world to explore. And this is what you need right now after a long absence of interesting games and quarantine.”

“It retreads the same ground of the prior games' fetch-quest-driven, backtracking-filled action-adventuring.”

“In many ways, it feels like Shantae and the Seven Sirens is the culmination of everything WayForward has learned since that initial release a little less than two decades back. Shantae and the Seven Sirens pulls some of the best elements from the titles that came before it, such as the dungeons and fast transformations, while adding in several cool new ones too, like the collectable cards and lovable new characters. A short but sweet runtime, well-drawn visuals, a catchy soundtrack and a well-designed map make this one an easy recommendation to anybody looking for the next must-have Metroidvania for their Switch.”

“A highly entertaining Metroidvania-styled platformer with fantastically witty writing and amusing dialogue.”

“While I’m a relatively recent fan of the Shantae series, having just been introduced to it in the collection release on Switch a while ago, I’m definitely getting into the groove and enjoying what feels like its consistency...”

“None of this is to say Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a bad game. In fact, it's a decent game for the younger audience, newcomers, and anyone that isn't expecting Shantae to evolve. Strictly from the perspective of someone that has played many games in the series and is eager for something different, though, this disappoints on many fronts. Uninspiring and rarely ever surprising, with little to make the player feel like they've earned anything, what is left is a generic Shantae game that is like any other before it, crying out for change and originality.”

“Shantae and the Seven Sirens is an entirely typical game in the Metroid-like genre that will be very familiar to anyone who plays them. Despite this, the game's gorgeous visuals, extremely responsive controls, strong level design, and witty writing make it a joy to play through.”

“Shantae and the Seven Sirens successfully dances back onto consoles with a gorgeous performance marred by being a bit too light on story for its own good.”

“Apart from those complaints--which are minor in the grand scheme of things--Seven Sirens is a wonderful game and might well be the equal of Pirate's Curse, which is no small feat. The game does feature several ending screens for completing the game in various ways and a second game mode that's akin to Risky's Revenge: Director's Cut instead of Half-Genie Hero. There's also a nice movie viewer if you want to sample the Studio Trigger cutscenes. Like I said, if you're itching for a good Metroidvania or just like Shantae games generally, Seven Sirens is a lock.”
