How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Redfall is a broken mess that serves as the worst kind of Xbox Series X|S representation and a huge stain on Microsoft, Bethesda and Arkane's reputation going forward.”

“Redfall, simply put, is a disappointment. What else can be said? In the end, uninteresting gameplay, untapped potential, boring or first-rate systems... We don't know what went wrong in Arkane Austin. But this really isn't the game we expected from them. Or anyone, for that matter.”

“When Arkane releases a new game, it's always a celebration. But not this time. It's rare to see a new game from a big publisher of which you can't come up with anything good to say.”

“Knowing the Dishonored and Prey franchises, my expectations for Redfall were high, but unfortunately, they were not met. The empty story, graphical issues, completely dysfunctional AI, bugs, and lack of optimization undermined my trust in Arkane, a studio I had always trusted completely. Even if fixes are implemented throughout Redfall's lifespan, the game's fundamental issues will remain. Moreover, it's important to highlight that, despite being available on Game Pass, the R$350 price tag for purchasing the game is significant. This is the first time in its history that Arkane has failed so disastrously.”

“Redfall is, in a word, a disaster. It takes less than twenty hours to finish, even if you complete every single quest. The price is exorbitant, the technical performance is terrible, the visuals are outdated, the optimization is bizarre, the gameplay is incredibly repetitive, the co-op is half-baked, the bosses are as easy as the game itself, and there’s plenty more I’ve mentioned above. The only real standout features are the skill tree, the good voice acting, and the origin of the vampires. But when I consider that this is a AAA game from a studio that has consistently made great games, it’s just disheartening. Personally, I don’t recommend this game, though I can’t rule out the possibility that they might still be working on it. But who knows, Arkane is already planning its next AAA title.”

“Redfall, with its mediocre gameplay, forgettable story and generic visuals, comes closer to destroying Arkane's legacy than it does to being a properly enjoyable video game.”

“Redfall is a disappointing offering from Arkane that lacks the charm, depth, and mechanics that made their previous titles so beloved.”

“Redfall's compelling world-building and settings are inhibited by shallow mechanics and a lack of identity.”

“Redfall gets everything wrong right from the start, and any attempt by the developers to save what can be saved turns out to be completely drained and lacking grit. The insurmountable mountain of narrative, technical and creative problems instantly extinguish the feeble dim light that could be glimpsed in the distance.”

“While the game's "early access" state means that its technical issues can be fixed, Redfall's major problem is that its makers do not know what makes this type of shooter work. Maybe Arkane did not have enough time to properly make it, or maybe they shipped it a year too early. Whatever the case, this just feels like an obligation project, with its team woefully inept at figuring out why this genre of shooters functions in the first place. From its uninspired and not-so-hot loot system, its broken combat, its empty world, and ho-hum-to-boring missions that are poorly designed, there is really no sane reason why you should play Redfall. Well, apart from mild curiosity and the fact that you can subject yourself to the suckfest for free on Game Pass.”

“Redfall is the worst AAA game release in years. Bugs, glitches, poor performance, terrible mission design, broken AI, and everything in between are here in spades. There is no saving this one and there is no excuse for how this game was released in this state.”
