How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty isn’t a bad game per-se and fans of Dark Souls-esque combat should find enough to whet the appetite. Once you get the hang of the Critical-counters and playing aggressively, Wo Long isn’t too much of a challenge though, which is perhaps a bit of a disappointment. The gameplay is very much going to be a make-or-break affair for many people.”

“The act of swordplay is still quite fun in Wo Long, but as soon as you'll get to ending credits, the game will likely just evaporate from you brain entirely.”

“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a noticeable evolution of the Nioh series. The combat system is still fast but more focused on deflecting attacks. Apart from a few technical errors, this is an excellent action hardcore RPG that I recommend not only fans of this genre to try. The game is well-designed, especially its moral system.”

“Despite not fixing the downsides of their previous games, Team Ninja created a good souls-like with familiar gameplay and some cool fresh ideas. Wo Long is more accessible than most games in this genre, but at the same time it stays difficult enough and offers a good challenge.”

“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty features an engaging story set in a historical setting and an entertaining combat system. Dynamic battles and the ability to choose your playstyle create a solid foundation for an action RPG. However, technical issues, particularly in the expansions, and its high price compared to the competition prevent it from reaching the same heights.”

“Wo Long is a good starting point for soulslike newbies and some needed breather for more experienced players. They won't break a sweat, but their time won’t be wasted. Wo Long has a really well-designed combat system. Pity that nothing else is as good.”

“Far from an unqualified win, Wo Long does manage to be an entertaining ride. When it leans into the strength of its combat it’s a joy. But much like that combat, there’s a push and pull to the changes that never quite coalesce.”

“If you are coming into this as a curious fan of the Souls series, there are a lot of commonalities that may be intriguing, but those are merely accents to what is truly a classic Team Ninja experience.”

“Wo Long is definitely a good Soulslike, with addicting combat and epic encounters, but an uneven parry and level design drag the experience down.”

“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is an impressive iteration for Team Ninja. It’s a more accessible title without sacrificing the challenge intrinsic to its success, it features one of the developer’s most satisfying combat systems to date, and it accomplishes this in levels that sport more verticality and exploration than ever before. It falters more than it probably should with regard to storytelling and graphical presentation, a somewhat consistent shortcoming in Team Ninja games, but it’s an exceptionally easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys more tasking action RPGs.”

“Wo Long is fun and well made, but the features that allow it to shine aren't quite as developed as they should be.”

“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's shaky story and reliance on grinding let down one of the most satisfying soulslikes on the market. This proves Team Ninja is more than just the sum of its parts, even if it may need a sequel to get the most out of it.”
