How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“The Hinokami Chronicles is a bit of a mess. Tacked-on and boring story mode, bland combat, repetitive game design, it’s simply not worth the time even for hardcore Demon Slayer fans.”

“If you really want to try out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles, just wait for the next sale. At this state the feels more like a prototype. CyberConnect2 can certainly do better.”

“We are really happy about the next "fighting style" game adaptation of the famous anime series. The experience of the Demon Slayer story from the player's view was great. But we still feel that the playstyle was limited and we are looking for more immersive parts.”

“Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is literally a must for all fans of the original anime. The game, in its own distinctive style, describes Tanjiro's story through a shorter but well-crafted Adventure Mode. However, if you just want to kick the asses of unpopular characters, you'll appreciate Versus Mode as well. Overall, this is a hilarious title that certainly has something to offer even those who haven't heard of Demon Slayer. The beautiful anime graphic styling, engaging story, action-packed combat, smooth controls, tons of content, visually appealing effects, and heartfelt dubbing are sure to keep you entertained.”

“Demon Slayer: -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is a very solid action game, presenting a gripping story and thrilling action combat alongside an art style that almost perfectly matches the popular anime. Though combat can sometimes feel a bit shallow and the performance isn't always perfect, we'd still give this one a strong recommendation, even to those who don't have any background with the anime or manga.”

“This Demon Slayer game is a great treat for fans, with an incredible recreation of the best scenes of the anime, but its short longevity and character roster makes the experience feel heavily lacking.”

“Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is a pretty great first video game entry for the Demon Slayer series. While it’s exploration and roster is a little thin, it’s presentation of the story and it’s flashy, engaging combat had me addicted to both it’s main adventure and online modes. I’m interested to see how the game expands and is balanced over time with new fighters continuing to be added in post release updates, but most of all I’m interested to see what features and tweaks can be implemented in a sequel.”

“As anime games go, Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba The Hinokami Chronicles is a relatively good one. It’s not remarkable, nor does it do anything new, but it’s first and foremost catering to fans of the anime and manga anyways. It seems like developer CyberConnect 2 has put a bit of effort into this one, compared to other barebones and horrible anime games like My Hero One’s Justice 2.”

“Series fans will find something to enjoy, yet those simply looking a fighting experience with friends will find this to be frustrating.”

“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Hinokami Chronicles covers the contents of the anime to the end of the Mugen Train arc, but this representation doesn't even work well for fans of the series.”

“Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is carried by its fantastic presentation, which expertly captures the look and feel of the anime. Bombastic boss fights and some stunning cutscenes are enough to sell the otherwise short-lived story mode, but outside of that, this is a rather barebones package. Battles can be flashy and fun, but the combat system doesn't have the necessary depth to hook anyone who isn't a Demon Slayer super fan. If this is just the first step in a new series from CyberConnect2, then it's a solid debut that'll no doubt form the basis for a much meatier sequel.”

“The Hinokami Chronicles is a fighter arena with a poor character roster at the time of its release, and an unorganic story mode. You will be forced to finish it only to see the cutscenes and unlock the characters, instead of exploring battle systems. But not everything is disappointing, as the art direction is incredible, with special attacks taken directly from the anime, and the inclusion of the original music is greatly appreciated.”
