How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

I have no idea how Dread Delusion would strike newcomers, but retro throwbacks like these aren’t appealing to that audience first. This is a game built for people like me; people who loved being lost in Morrowind; people who still think Stilt Striders are the superior form of fast travel; and people who were addicted to Skooma before they were old enough to drink. If you grew up on Morrowind, I think you’ll love Dread Delusion just as much as I do.

Dread Delusion is a first-person action RPG that conflicts with the genre at nearly every turn. The visuals, pacing, and gameplay create a wholly unique experience that won't be for everyone. Those who connect with its general vibe, however, will get a game they'll want to discuss repeatedly with anyone who's played it.

Dread Delusion, the RPG by Lovely Hellplace, invites us to explore a crumbling and surreal world, with a very particular and nostalgic gameplay experience. A title that stands out for a more than striking aesthetic and a solid scenario design with a color scheme that contrasts very well. The furious crimson sky notoriously highlights the flora and fauna of the islands that are differentiated by their biome and buildings.

Dread Delusion is a promising title that offers players both an intriguing story and a unique day-and-night cycle. However, its repetitive side quests may be less appealing to some players. This title is certainly intended for all players who enjoy atmospheric and dark RPGs with a compelling story. If you stick to the main storyline, it will take you about ten hours to complete, but beyond that, it offers another thirty hours of entertainment. So hop aboard the airship and set off on an adventure!

The world is intriguing, the dialogue surprisingly funny, and the sights something to behold. The game may end up a little too soft and mushy to wholly come together, but its ease can allow for a wider audience to come check out just how zany everything else is.

If you come to Dread Delusion to soak in the Lovecraftian fever dream inspired lore, you’ll find a lot to like. Just be prepared to contend with clumsy combat and periods of aimless wandering across barren landscapes.

Dread Delusion offers an extraordinary experience that takes us back to a time when everything was less straightforward, and we had to figure out what to do and where to go, managing to deliver a nostalgic yet still solid experience. However, we cannot overlook the numerous flaws that plague the game, leaving it feeling almost incomplete and imperfect, though we are sure that genre enthusiasts will still find plenty of enjoyment in embarking on this adventure.

Dread Delusion offers an interesting universe and a gorgeous art style, but both are thoroughly wrapped up in a mechanically thin and ultimately unsatisfying RPG experience. The Oneiric Isles capture the spirit of the RPG worlds of the past, and there’s a wide breadth of content and characters to learn more about throughout them, but Dread Delusion’s decided lack of difficulty, one-note combat, and widespread balancing issues actively distract from its highly enjoyable world.

Dread Delusion is a fascinating and atmospheric indie RPG that captures the spirit of old-school exploration, offering a strange, psychedelic world full of meaningful choices, deep lore, and unforgettable visual identity, even if its combat lacks real depth.

There’s something to be said for the game’s ambitiously large (but small) world for people with a sense of adventure, but clunky mechanics and lackluster design make it tough to really love

There is a tremendous, cozy satisfaction to peeling back the layers of this game that is delightfully addictive. . . Dread Delusion is maddeningly close to being impressively timeless.

In games such as this, loose combat, stripped-back and repetitive (if effective) audio, are minor niggles when compared to what is truly offered here, which is a wonderfully realised RPG that celebrates the auteurism of James Wragg’s deeply realised world, a world that needs to be discovered, as enchanting and evocative as it is.
