How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Soulstice is a small, but fun and engaging project with some minor but noticeable shortcomings in later stages.”

“Soulstice is a blast from the past. It looks like something from 2000s, but feels fresh among dozens of souls-likes.”

“Soulstice is trying to carve out a niche for itself in the action-packed beat-'em-up genre, and it’s only partially succeeding. Although the main plot doesn’t offer anything particularly original, it serves as the backdrop for an interestingly tragic story of two sisters whose bond was so strong that they remained inseparable even after death. It’s a shame that the developers tried so hard to copy older titles that they couldn’t avoid some of the same issues that plagued those games back then. However, if you’re in the mood to let off some steam, Soulstice offers exactly the right kind of brutal combat, a dark atmosphere, and a challenging experience.”

“It may not immediately aspire to the same household-name status as some of its sources of inspiration, but fans of the [action RPG] genre would be hard-pressed to not find plenty to enjoy here.”

“Despite some gaffes, one of its biggest strengths is that it achieves exactly what many AA titles set out to do by delivering on a somewhat uncommon genre that has largely fallen out of favor. Soulstice may not reach the highest echelons of character-action bliss, but when its art direction, mechanics, and score are in harmony, it scratches an itch that only this brand of stylish spectacle can.”

“Reply Game Studios' goal has been hit: Soulstice is a respectable stylish action that deserves a place next to the "holy monsters" major exponents of the genre. Although it has it's flaws in the variety of environments, quality of storytelling and depth of plot, as a whole it manages to achieve a maturity, absolute solidity and personality that make it far worthwhile and appealing to all fans of the genre.”

“Soulstice absolutely works as a love letter to action games of the bygone PlayStation 2 era. Vitally, however, it does so without losing a clear identity of its own. Its combat system is unique in the way it asks players to actively monitor mechanics while also avoiding enemy attacks and dishing out flashy combos in true character action game fashion. Its boss battles leave quite a bit to be desired, and the level design may be a bit too narrow at points, but Soulstice manages to make up for these shortcomings with an emotional story and a unique brand of observation-based gameplay that ensures its status as a confident addition to the genre.”

“Soulstice has a lot of, well, spirit to make it more than above-average hack and slash 2000-era fare. "A" for effort, at the very least.”

“Ultimately, a combat game has to be judged by how good its combat is, and in that respect Soulstice passes with flying colors.”

“Soulstice is a fast-paced action adventure that has all the elements required to scratch that Bayonetta or Devil May Cry itch, but struggles to maintain its momentum due to combat design choices, dull characters, and the lack of flair that’s usually associated with games in its genre.”

“Strong gameplay and an even stronger story come together to make Soulstice a good character action game, even if issues with weapons, level design, and the camera drag it down.”

“I loved my experience with Soulstice. The fast pace of the game makes us never want to stop. The developers managed to combine different styles in a brilliant way. With the multiple difficulty levels, there's a challenge for everyone.”
