How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

This isn’t a game that necessarily attempts to do anything new in what is undoubtedly a crowded genre, but everything it does, it does very well. It’s a slick experience with gorgeous visuals, engaging combat, and challenging, yet fair boss encounters. The soundtrack has also been noticeably improved over the previous game, making this a must-play for fans of the series and, indeed, Metroidvanias in general.

Consistently amazing combat isn’t a prerequisite to succeed in the Metroidvania genre, and Momodora: Moonlit Farewell succeeds at enough other things to ultimately make it a solid recommendation for fans of the genre. It understands good item-based progression, makes exploration rewarding without undervaluing its powerups, and presents a varied & interesting world that invites players back and makes them want to explore more.

In terms of play, it is a solid Metroidvania experience, but it’s also a bit less distinctive than many of its peers on the system

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell presents itself as a well-crafted metroidvania that, while not revolutionising the genre, offers a solid and satisfying experience. The quality of the pixel art, evocative music and well-balanced game mechanics make it a worthy title. The porting to Nintendo Switch adds value with extra content and the convenience of portability, making it a recommended purchase for both fans of the series and new players looking for an immersive adventure. The title is an homage to classic metroidvanias, enhanced by modern touches and a top-notch artistic presentation. The Nintendo Switch version amplifies the appeal of the title, offering a complete and accessible experience on a versatile platform.

For those who remembers Momodora series, the traverse and combat difficulty of the latest installment might feel a bit lacking. However, it is still a well-balanced 2D platformer action game that shines with convenience and beautiful pixel visuals.

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell a game unlike any other - a metroidvania with a truly unique aesthetic that blends all my favorite things into one unforgettable package. It may be the final chapter in the Momodora story, but I can only hope there are plenty more games from Bombservice to come.

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is a very satisfying experience. It does not drag on too long, nor does it wrap up too quickly. The combat feels uniquely presented and flows well. With tons of enemy and boss variety, alongside the beautiful locales and fleshed-out characters that accompany Momo throughout. Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is very worth your time and money. I am already excited about playing through it again to see how much faster I can get through it. I very rarely feel attracted to replaying anything, but this game's journey is worth seeing through multiple times, and I can guarantee you will feel the same.

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell sends the series off with a well-deserved celebration of everything that makes the franchise great. It doesn’t reinvent the action-adventure formula, but it delivers a highly polished and heartfelt experience that showcases the developer’s years of growth and refinement. For longtime fans, it’s a fitting farewell. For newcomers, it’s an excellent starting point that may just inspire you to go back and explore the rest of the series. Either way, Moonlit Farewell is a fantastic adventure, one crafted with passion, precision, and a deep love for the genre.
