How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Yes, the English voice acting can be grating, the yellow paint is obnoxious, and the late-game combat becomes a bit too easy. But the sheer creativity of the world-building, the haunting enemy designs, and the phenomenal art direction make this an absolute must-play. At $17.99, it provides an unbeatable value that puts many full-priced AAA horror titles to shame.

Crisol: Theater of Idols excels as a lower budget horror with high ambitions. It's got its foibles and I can nitpick all day, but so much style and effort has been poured into it that I just have to come away impressed. Fantastic visual and audio direction does a lot of the heavy lifting, taking this from a solid little homage to something more special. Creepy, intriguing, and with enough mechanical gimmickry to feel more different than it actually is, I’m certainly very glad I played it.

Crisol: Theater of Idols has a number of shortcomings, I don't feel like criticizing it. It's clear that an inexperienced team was behind the project - one that did a great job with the story and atmosphere but failed at creating a horror game.

Vermila Studio plunges us into the abyss of a twisted faith that turns the body into a resource in an oppressive survival horror, focusing on identity, risk, and religious symbolism. *Crisol Theater of Idols* is a work that does not seek to please or seduce on the surface. Its power stems from identity, risk, and an artistic vision that dares to unsettle without asking permission. It is a survival horror that understands sacrifice not only as a mechanic but as a discourse, and that builds its world through symbolism, oppression, and constant attrition.

Technically, Crisol: Theater of Idols is a solid game, featuring cohesive art direction, a well-crafted atmosphere, smart audio design, and a campaign with a fair length. However, its uneven pacing midway through the experience and strong inspirations from the Resident Evil franchise prevent it from achieving something greater, even though they do not erase its merits.

Crisol: Theater of Idols is a horror game that really tries to stand out from the crowd, and thanks to the idea of using your own blood as ammunition, it manages to do so quite convincingly. It’s not entirely perfect, though, at times the game is a bit too easy, some battles aren’t exactly nerve-wracking, and the story comes across as mysterious in places mainly because it doesn’t really explain much. On the other hand, it has a great atmosphere, original ideas, and a visual style you’ll remember. If you like horror games that experiment with new mechanics and aren’t afraid to be a little weird, Crisol is definitely worth a try. And most importantly, remember one key rule while playing: you’ll never run out of ammo here… because you are the ammo.

Crisol: Theater of Idols doesn’t try to reinvent horror, nor does it bring anything new that seasoned horror fans have not seen. However, the setting is unique, it presents an inventive story, and has some fun scares along the way.

Crisol: Theater of Idols whisks us away to a world where story and mechanics are perfectly balanced, offering an original tale alongside superb puzzles. It may pull its punches slightly when it comes to difficulty, but it executes its vision brilliantly. It is a satisfying experience and a must-play title for any collection.

Crisol: Theater of Idols is a horror FPS that stands out for focusing on action and combat rather than a slow-paced atmosphere. This, combined with an aesthetic that is strongly tied to the studio’s origins, makes the game a major highlight within the genre, even if it isn’t the scariest one.

I had a lot of fun with Crisol: Theatre of Idols, I played for 12 hours and enjoyed every second of it, it does a good job adding little tweaks and quirks to established horror formula. Combat may be the thing that some people don’t find as satisfying as it can be, but I enjoyed it enough to highly recommend this title. I don’t usually talk about price, but for what Crisol: Theatre of Idols is currently priced at - you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Roaming Tormentosa, dipping back into the fair hub, and slowly powering up your guns and health never stopped being satisfying. Strong audio and visuals pull it all together into a campaign I was happy to finish, and immediately dive back in for another run.
