How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 91.9, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 2,045 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Sorry We’re Closed not only pays homage to classic survival horror, it provides a truly unique love story that delves into the very nature of romance itself. For all its theming and grisly imagery, however, there’s a script with a pointed sense of humor and a cast of fun characters to match. Combat has good ideas set back by some awkward implementation, but the moments of annoyance aren’t enough to pull down the sum of all parts.”

“Sorry We’re Closed is a creative approach to a familiar genre, and the best horror game I’ve played this past month. This is not the kind of horror game that will leave you jumping out of your chair, but rather the kind of slow burn that you feel in your chest and sometimes just beneath your skin. À La Mode Games has created a horror world that I can’t wait to return to in future replays. I worked hard to get the worst ending the first time, one that took my breath away and didn’t need a Third Eye to rip my heart out. I want to earn the remaining endings and have the opportunity to fall in love with this gem again and again.”

“Any horror game that gets me to play it, and actually enjoy it, is worth checking out. Sorry We’re Closed weaves a heartfelt narrative of heartbreak and loneliness through a cast of charming, memorable characters. The ability to switch between isometric and first-person perspectives is well-executed, and the third-eye power adds a clever twist to both puzzles and combat. I didn’t know what to expect when I first booted it up, but I found myself deeply connected to the characters and their stories. Don’t sleep on this game, Sorry We’re Closed is doing things I haven’t seen in many other games.”

“The game exhibits the most confident grasp of its own artistic sensibility this side of Paradise Killer.”

“Sorry We're Closed is one of the most unique and memorable survival horror games we've ever played. The juxtaposition of bright colours and quirky characters against moments of true terror is unlike anything we've ever seen before, and the first-person combat mechanics manage to feel immensely satisfying and empowering while still retaining a sense of creeping dread. This is a world we won't soon forget, and unlike the protagonist's desire to shy away from love, we suspect you'll immediately fall head over heels for this one.”

“Sorry We're Closed is an adventure that manages to stand out for its fusion of classic elements and innovation, fully capturing the essence of survival horror. It is a title that aims to offer much more than a simple scary experience, offering an introspective journey that invites the player to reflect and confront their own demons and personal difficulties. Despite some technical flaws and the change between fixed camera and first-person view that may be unintuitive for some, the game shines with its overflowing personality. Its strength lies in its ability to convey deep emotions, offering a unique experience with a strong narrative impact.”

“By shamelessly blending visceral and garish elements, developer à la mode has crafted a weird survival-horror game that's tough to put down.”

“Undeniably colorful, weird, and wild… but perhaps a bit too up and down for its own good”

“A beautiful and impressive game.”

“Sorry We’re Closed is an incredible debut from á la mode games. It dares to go where scarce horror games have gone prior in making their underworld adventure also dreamy, poppy and dripping in substance. The world of demons and angels is tantalising in writing and worldbuilding but also visual design, depicted as god-like otherworldly hotties. Thankfully that substance isn’t skin deep and also translates to inventive horror gameplay design where you’re constantly shifting between claustrophobic fixed camera positioning for arena fights and first-person mode for lining up crunchy shotgun blasts. All these moving parts make for a memorable adventure filled with exciting boss fights, wicked needle-drop moments mid-battle and deep discussions on love and relationships. Quite simply the coolest survival horror game to ever exist, Sorry We’re Closed is certifiably one for the girlies.”
