How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“It could have been done better, but no harm had been committed. Age of Mythology bewitches you with visuals and atmosphere but keeps you under its spell by addictive gameplay, which hasn´t gotten old even after 22 years. It can surprise experienced players and newbies who have to taste the feeling when Titan turns the enemy´s fort into dust in a blink of an eye.”

“Age of Mythology: Retold will probably be my Game of the Year. I won’t lie, I don’t think any other title will be able to top it, even though it’s essentially a “recycled work.” Creating a remaster isn’t easy, because you have to strike that delicate balance that everyone has played, heard, and come to love. You have to honor and respect the original work; otherwise, there’s probably no way to build on its legacy. But if you think I’m choosing this game just out of nostalgia, you’d be wrong. This game is incredible from every angle, and while I’ll admit that the voice acting bothers me, simply because I love the original, and the customizable automation schemes are just a pain, I don’t regret a single point I’ve awarded the game in my overall rating. And as I said, that’s exactly what I did.”

It brings enough changes to the table to offer a new experience, but at the same time one that is in other ways bound in the past. “Replaying Age of Mythology in its improved version and after many years has been nothing short of exciting. The PlayStation 5 version is no different from the others and includes the entire basic package that you can also find on other platforms. Age of Mythology Retold is an almost perfect title, which only lacks small details that can be solved with a few patches, such as frame rate drops when using divine powers. However, the rest of the package offered by Microsoft is of high quality, despite the fact that it is a spin-off chapter. With Age of Mythology Retold arriving on PlayStation 5 after the PC and Xbox versions, now even Sony PlayStation users can enjoy one of the most important sagas of the RTS genre, including all the improvements in terms of quality of life. And as with the original, here too it is possible to use a series of tricks that increase the longevity of the title (here you can find all the tricks for Age of Mythology Retold). The presence of the Italian language should not be underestimated. Both subtitles and Italian dubbing are present, with some voices revised for this version compared to the original. Age of Mythology for PS5 is a complete and high-quality gaming experience in every aspect. With the addition of Immortal Pillars, which brings all the previously available material, we hope for the arrival of unreleased content that can further enrich the title.”

“there's no denying that Age of Mythology’s gameplay can feel simplistic, which is ironic, considering how influential the series has been. Having played a bunch back in the day, the missed campaigns are appreciated, but we can’t see ourselves regularly returning to the well.”
