How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2, the sequel to the 2021 arcade racing game, repeats the formula with additions that manage to keep the heart of the game fresh: quick and simple fun. An arcade proposal, oriented to fast fun but with a large number of vehicles and tracks that guarantee its longevity.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged isn’t a revolution, but rather an evolution of the first game, one that has ironed out some of its shortcomings, such as the limited number of race modes and the sometimes excessively high difficulty, while also adding new features, like the ability to push your opponents out of the way. Unfortunately, it’s still not a perfect game, and there are a few aspects that Milestone should improve upon in the future. Even so, I can recommend this sequel to both owners of the first game and newcomers who haven’t tried the series yet. Seven out of ten.

Fans of Hot Wheels will feel well served from a nostalgia point of view, and inspired by its huge number of new modes. Unleashed 2: Turbocharged combines furious arcade race challenges with childlike creativity, being able to build tracks any which way, and race them to breaking point. You can feel the Switch's lack of muscle, with a markedly smudgier feel than the grip offered by more powerful consoles, but as a racing experience bursting with customisation, modes, and creativity to mine, it's both an excellent successor to the 16-Bit Micro Machines legacy and sits firmly in pole position over its predecessor.

“Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged” is exactly what I expect from a sequel: better mechanics, more variety and depth. Milestone delivers that packaged with one of the best arcade racers of 2023. Definitely a must have whether you like Hot Wheels or not.

After finishing the campaign in a few hours, I've felt that Unleashed 2 didn't have much to offer. The track builder is a strong feature for the creative type players, and overall the game is solid, even if a bit too simple. If you can grab it at a discount, it's a good Christmas gift for children who like the toy brand, but other than that, I can't recommend this game at its full price.

I can't fault Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged too much. It's like an arcade racer straight out of your childhood dreams. It nails that feeling of being a kid and creating wild racecourses for your toy cars. Plus, the customisation options are off the charts. The quick races and the variety of modes keep things from getting stale, and before you know it, you're boosting your way to glory. I might not be a hardcore Hot Wheels fan, but the sheer imagination, speed, and customisation in this game totally reeled me in.

Milestone’s follow-up to 2021’s Hot Wheels Unleashed is a worthy successor, but the lack of the first game’s DLC cars is an uncomfortable sore spot.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 “turbocharges” the arcade racing genre and adds to the core of the original game without changing the actual formula of an arcade racer. Players interested in arcade racers who can overlook the microtransaction aspect of the game can get the game at launch. Others can wait for a sale to decide for themselves how good the game really is.

Hotwheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged does an amazing job in providing a mechanically and visually pleasing experience, but the campaign mode has some downsides.

I was rather skeptical about having a sequel so soon, but I'm forced to admit that Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged has succeeded. The title offers several new features that further diversify the pleasures. While the soundtrack remains repetitive and I was hoping to keep the environments from the last game as well as the new ones, the game remains more interesting. The more comprehensive story mode is an excellent introduction to the different types of racing. The art direction remains faithful to the actual license, and will undoubtedly provide fun for young and old alike.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged is a highly polished, fast-paced, fun, and robust racing sequel that builds upon its predecessor in all the right ways. Addressing almost all our criticisms of the previous title by adding impressive core mechanic modifications in the form of jumps, dashes, and new terrains, removing loot boxes, and adding obstacle immunity skills, Milestone has created a fantastic follow-up arcade racer to be reckoned with.
