How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Rue Valley is a good title that will surely appeal to fans of Disco Elysium and CRPGs in general, thanks to its refined artistic style, engaging soundtrack and impeccable writing of the protagonist, capable of creating a strong emotional bond with the player. The time rewind mechanic is well implemented, adding depth to the gameplay and encouraging exploration and experimentation. However, the game can be disappointing due to the lack of depth in the choices, which rarely affect the plot, and the apparent uselessness of the skill system. Added to this is a story that, after a promising start, and underdeveloped secondary characters, seem to quickly exhaust their narrative potential. All this makes the work, despite its merits, a wasted opportunity, especially in terms of dynamic storytelling and engagement through choices.”

“Rue Valley is a solid entry to the narrative genre, offering an engaging and cohesive story. Minor flaws do hold it back just a bit, though fans of the genre are still in for a treat. The characters are relatable, especially Eugene with his tailored stats, so it can quickly morph into some self-exploration after a while.”

“An interesting premise with some really good ideas in an exceptionally deep and well-designed world, which ultimately feels lacking both as an adventure/RPG and as a "Disco clone".”

“However, the way in which your create-a-character's mental profile gates off certain interactions and dialogue trees is frustrating and made me feel often like I had just rolled a bad character; I can't see myself returning to a narrative experience like this one after seeing the story through, so I'm not sure why all the gatekeeping and roadblocks exist. If you're a sucker for Groundhog Day, time loop tales, or point-and-click mysteries, your enjoyment of Rue Valley may reach a higher peak. I was already tempted to check out of this motel before my suitcase was unpacked.”

“Rue Valley is an isometric narrative RPG that triumphs in its magnetic writing. Every succinct conversation feels like it was made for an exquisite novel. Certain dialogues, with Eugene or otherwise, ring sincere to the point of making you invested in these characters’ lives, even beyond the current predicament the protagonist is in.”

“Ultimately, Rue Valley is a frustrating experience, with too many loose ends and unresolved arcs at the end of the game. It’s unable to make the most of its excellent setup, faltering in the mid and late game stages as you’re forced between slow montages and extremely specific puzzle sequences. It’s a game with great writing and some truly fantastic ways of exploring depression and mental health, but it mechanically falls flat.”

“Rue Valley is an isometric narrative RPG gem that blends a captivating, emotionally-charged story with memorable characters all in one package. Although it has a few technical weaknesses, it doesn't heavily retract from the overall experience. Eugene Harrow's strange journey into the unknown of his own psyche and other people is an intriguing, even relatable, experience.”

“A time loop adventure with an interesting premise and characters, but a frustratingly rigid structure that fails to resolve most of the stories it sets up.”

“Rue Valley is a mixed bag. Its strongest moments are getting to grips with Eugene’s situation, learning the character’s routines, and the initial sense of mystery and intrigue. Regretfully, it doesn’t stick to landing due to a rough and utterly boring final stretch. If you want an RPG, you aren’t really going to get one here.”

“There are some good ideas in Rue Valley's depressioncore time loop, but the execution makes it feel more like a chore than a charm.”

“Overall, Rue Valley gets off to a very strong start, and after a brief period of uncertainty, it manages to bring the story to a satisfying close. When it came to choosing and shaping our personality, I felt the developers missed a few genuinely promising opportunities, but I didn’t regret at all being there alongside Eugene during one of the long, at times painfully self-honest hours of his life.”
