How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.1, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 4,344 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

Cat Quest III is a familiar yet flawless action adventure with fluid and fantastic-feeling combat. Its charming story and witty writing bring life to the Purribean, one of the best-designed mini-open worlds in recent memory. That open world is packed with satisfying quests and engaging puzzles to solve that almost always throw some new idea or challenge at you. The progression here is smooth, and the entire experience is precisely paced with no performance issues at all. Some stunning animation work, accompanied by a gorgeous shanty-like pirate soundtrack tops off an excellent adventure. All of that together ensures that Cat Quest III is a pristine pirate adventure and action RPG. Quite simply, one of the best indie games of the year.

I don’t think Cat Quest III is going to blow anyone away, but I think it is entirely worthy to be in this franchise. Do you like fun action RPG games that focus on solid, simple game mechanics? Do you like cats? Do you enjoy exploring and finding things to do in the world, searching around for a bit, and then going through the game again? Then you’re going to get your money’s worth and more from Cat Quest III.

While simple in design, Cat Quest III offers quite a bit of a challenge for the first few hours until you find a favourite weapon or spell (or two) you can cheese with, like with the Orion Sword and lightning build I made up and hour-and-a-half in. Still, this doesn't discount the fun factor and charm the game embodies. Plus, the added New Game Plus mode, the Infinity Tower challenge, and Mew mode modifiers where you can make the game harder for yourself (like no leveling up or no upgrading equipment) will definitely sate challenge buffs everywhere. Simply put, Cat Quest III offers a lot for both casual and hardcore action RPG fans who want a bit of open-world on an indie game scale, a good chunk of feel-good equipment-based fighting and spellcasting, and a whole lotta cute. Just prepare to read through a barrage of animal puns in the story.

Cat Quest III is a delightful ARPG that embodies what I love about the genre: colorful themes, adventuring, and thrilling, fast-paced combat that also yields subtle depth.

Although it has it's charm, there is little substance to this cat based pirate game. It is a game decidedly marketed at young children.

Cat Quest 3 doesn't quite live up to the expectations that were set by its purrfectly poised predecessor, but it's still a rock solid seafaring adventure. While it falls short of Cat Quest 2 in terms of size and overall scope, this is perhaps a more focused take on the series' action RPG formula, and the game's pirate theme gives it an undeniable charm.

The Gentlebros, the developer behind the franchise, brings yet another incredibly fun game. For those with a light heart who aren't expecting a serious story, and especially for those who enjoy lighter and more fun combat, this title is definitely a hit and one of the most enjoyable pirate games I’ve ever played.

The latest entry in the Cat Quest series showers us with more quests, more secrets, and way more fun. A textbook example of how to properly make a sequel that doesn't overstay its welcome.
