How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 80 | 19 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 89% | 83 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 84 | 21 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 82% | 76 | 59 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Prison Architect is a fun building game where you get to manage your own prison. It's a little too complex at times and I don't like some of the artwork, but the pros outweigh the cons. I recommend checking it out if you're a fan of sim games.”

“It's still an awkward fit for console controls, but the game beneath them is worth the effort nonetheless.”

“Prison Architect has a very weak single player campaign and is plagued with minor issues. But even if we don't forget about these things this game is one of the best tycoons in recent years. It has an excellent sandbox mode, good AI, is very complex, offers lots of possibilities and can make you forget about time passing by.”

“Prison Architect, still considered one of the best management game on the market since 2015. Build and manage your own prison”

“There are many upsides to Prison Architect. From its smooth and easy controls, strong gameplay, and the chance for anyone to test how they would react when placed at a position of power. Of course, the game is not without its downsides either, such as the way it can end up fairly monotone once the game is mastered, but, as a whole, it's very worthwhile.”

“Prison Architect is a fantastic simulation game. Its clever systems combine in interesting and intuitive ways to create an experience which is tense, challenging, and engaging. Niggling control issues aside, the title is a terrific example of how a traditionally PC-only genre should be ported to consoles.”

“In many ways, Prison Architect feels like the ‘Theme Prison’ game from Bullfrog’s golden years that we never actually got. ”

“It should be noted that the Switch version is meant to also include an Escape Mode where you control an inmate trying to find their way out. For the purposes of this review, we haven't been able to check it out. Despite that omission, it's not hard to pour a bunch of time into Prison Architect, and I am happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a sim game to play on their couch.”

“Even though Prison Architect has its share of flaws and limitations, it’s still a fun experience I’m sure fans of the genre will enjoy.”

“Emerging from Early Access lean and focused, Prison Architect is one of the best management games in a long time.”

“The loss of humanity Prison Architect breeds in its players could be its greatest strength, but without even an acknowledgement of that loss, the game stumbles instead of teaches.”
