How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Simple to pick up and play, the precise, tension-filled combat is capable of turning friends into bitter rivals.”

“Samurai Gunn is a game about little else, really: you spawn, you fight, you fall, and then you spawn again - and fall again...This is hectic and hilarious and exhausting, in other words, and it's also very clever with its focus. ”

“An exciting, kinetic single-screen multiplayer with excellent level design, but little to reward the solo player.”

“An excellent example of how games can do more with less. Its combat is deceptively simple, there are no character advantages, and the tight, dangerous environments each feel unique. However, the lack of an online multiplayer mode will likely keep it relegated to “great party game” status.”

“Every time I play it I feel like I've mastered a new piece of the physics engine, or a new nuance to wall-jumping. It's one of those games that keeps on giving years later due to a solid foundation, so long as you have the company to enjoy it with.”

“Videogame reviews that fail at their description of the sublime often regress into a sort of buyer's guide. They tell you, in short, how far out of your way you should go for the game. But Samurai Gunn inspires just such a decree. If you don't have four controllers, a couch, and three friends yet, Samurai Gunn is a compelling case for making the investment.”

“A fighting game has to be pixel perfect to successfully reward patience and strategy. Samurai Gunn just isn't there yet. ”

“If the combat system had more depth to it, Samurai Gunn would have been much more enjoyable.”

“Samurai Gunn is surprisingly deep and a lot of strategy is mixed in with twitch reflexes, much like a sophisticated fighting game. However, the lack of game modes, serious decrease in enjoyment as a solo game, and some technical issues hold back this otherwise immensely fun game. If you can grab a couple friends and get controllers working, Samurai Gunn can make for an enjoyable night.”

“Samurai Gunn seems to be a simple game, but really it's a frenetic and addictive multiplayer action game.”
