How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a bit of an underwhelming RPG that has some unique gameplay mechanics. The open-ended world narrative structure feels freeing, but the characters are boring. The glimmer mechanic is fun, but the battle system lacks a strategic hook. Each of its gameplay systems is a double-edged sword, as we'd find a particular aspect enticing while another was baffling. It feels like a slight step back from the other recent SaGa games, but if you're a fan of the series, Revenge of the Seven might resonate with you more than it did with us.

“Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven” is an astounding accomplishment in how to create a remake while retaining the original game intent while also making it more approachable to newcomers. It deserved more attention in 1993, and it’s a must play in 2024.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a delightful reworking of a 16-bit era game, bringing it to a modern generation while keeping true to the art of the original. The challenging combat and depth of the original are completely intact, with new features and many modern niceties to make things less obtuse without hurting challenge or depth.

Even with the already saturated sea of JRPGs this year, this Romancing SaGa remake is worthy of your time whether you played the 1993 original to death, or just want to jump into a new style of the genre with fresh eyes and perspectives. Many of the original's core tenets are preserved and made better in this remake, which is the goal of the project really.

I really enjoyed my time with Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. The game is both entertaining and engaging in equal measure, and will easily please fans of the genre. In fact, it's another good representative of the turn-based JRPG genre in a year of heavyweight releases.

Romancing SaGa 2 boasts an expansive 3D world to explore, gorgeous character models and equipment, and compelling enemy designs. You can even choose between the original and a remastered orchestral score full of earworms from the glory days of the '90s. A remake of a classic JRPG many Western fans have missed, even three decades later, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven's inventive mechanics make it a worthwhile experience.

Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven is a fantastic JRPG and I hope this is the opportunity for it to connect with more people. SaGa is a series whose experimentation makes it have very high good moments, but extremely difficult to digest bad moments and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is one of the highest points it has hit and becomes the best way for anyone to try this series for the first time.

From the moment I played the demo at PAX West to when I rolled credits and immediately dove back in, I've been completely enamored with its nonlinear trappings and charming world-building. It's my sincere hope that the team that brought this remake to life will be given the reins to a Romancing SaGa 3 remake and then new SaGa titles moving forward, because they hit a grand slam with this one. There's no doubt on my end, cold or otherwise: Revenge is a dish best served with romance.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven's Nintendo Switch 2 version is a must-try for JRPG enthusiasts, offering a story focused not on one character but on the entire world. Its entertaining, if slightly grinding, gameplay, and its sheer volume of content make it difficult to fully grasp in one playthrough.
