How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Towerborne became a clear example of the fact that maintaining a live-service game after its support has been discontinued does more harm than good.

I had been waiting quite a while for the final version of Towerborne with a fair amount of anticipation, and I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint. Stoic managed to deliver a perfectly balanced, genuinely fun experience, featuring an engaging campaign, absurdly satisfying gameplay, and stunning art direction. Towerborne has the potential to appeal both to those looking for a more laid-back, casual experience and to hardcore fans of the brawler genre. For the latter, however, there’s still hope that crossplay and couch co-op will be implemented as soon as possible, so the experience can truly feel complete.

Towerborne is a good game. In fact, it’s superior to its Early Access release in almost every way. With an actual narrative, an engaging gameplay loop, and decent presentation, the game certainly has a unique charm that’s worth its weight. However, its potential will never fully be realized, as the removal of online servers really puts a spotlight on the game’s hollow multiplayer identity.

Not being able to name your Ace feels like a strange oversight. Will this game get more content or a roadmap past its release? Let’s hope so, as it’s a real hero of a game, lighting a path through a depressing absence of couch co-op RPGs.

Towerborne is a really fun game, refined and more mature than its free-to-play debut and, finally, complete in its definitive form, albeit with still some small flaws.

Towerborne is a focused and stylish co-op fighter with fun battles and good RPG substance. Sometimes repetitive, but hugely fun and well worth your time.

Towerborne's full release brings a wealth of smart tweaks that drastically improve the game from its early access version, crafting a gripping beat 'em up RPG that comes just shy of greatness.

Despite still being in Early Access, Towerborne shows great potential. The mix of beat'em up, loot system and RPG component makes the Stoic title a very rewarding experience, especially when played in co-op. If you are willing to tolerate the typical problems of a game in development, Towerborne may already prove to be a worthy title.

Towerborne has the world, music, and combat to hook players through many missions, but needs more variety and balance to keep its promising Belfry from becoming too routine.

Towerborne is a pleasant surprise in the Xbox catalog. Without revolutionizing anything but mindful of a glorious past unjustly buried or nearly so, it offers a neat and fun cooperative experience with great potential for the future. Its combat system is agile, its mechanics are well integrated, and its seasonal structure manages to maintain interest without overwhelming. There are corners to file, undoubtedly, but we are talking about a product that is still in early access and that offers a fairly long-lived ludic experience at a meager expense (if you are not a Game Pass subscriber, of course).

Towerborne is slick, chaotic, gorgeous and above all, fun. I have high hopes that with an eager community and the team at Stoic at the helm, listening and reacting, and above all working with that community, Towerborne can grow, from a unique and interesting game into something genre-defining, and proving perhaps, that new live-service games can succeed, even now.

Towerborne is pleasing to the eye and has a beautiful soundtrack to add to its artistic style. With plenty of customisations, visually and physically, you will find no end of ways to stand out from the other players.
