How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“A flawed-but-bold game that combines a genuinely atmospheric setting with a suite of imaginative sanity effects and some smart game-design elements which necessitate close cooperation. Don’t expect it to be an easy journey, however.”

“Until any potential fixes are made, the mound can remain buried for a little while longer.”

“ACE Team’s Lovecraftian cooperative shooter offers an original twist on the genre with a unique sanity system that helps shape a one-of-a-kind experience. *The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu* doesn’t aim to compete with the big cooperative shooters in terms of spectacle. Instead, it focuses on psychological tension, cooperation, and paranoia as the pillars of the experience. The game fully embraces one of the core tenets of cosmic horror: the setting isn’t just the place where the action takes place, it’s a character in its own right.”

“I went in expecting a decent co-op survival game with a Lovecraft skin, but what I found was one of the most effective portrayals of psychological horror I’ve experienced in gaming. Its madness system constantly keeps you questioning your own senses, the world is rich with intriguing lore, and the oppressive atmosphere perfectly captures the fear and uncertainty that define the Cthulhu Mythos.”

“The Mound Omen of Cthulhu has one genuinely excellent idea in its sanity system, delivering moments of paranoia and psychological horror that perfectly capture Lovecraft’s themes. Unfortunately, inconsistent performance on PS5, repetitive gameplay, clunky combat, and a general lack of polish prevent the rest of the experience from reaching the same standard.”

“ACE Team’s debut in the realm of extraction games represents an open challenge to today’s market, clearly demonstrating how a brilliant design concept can effortlessly overcome budget constraints and technical imperfections. The bold choice to transform Lovecraftian horror into an active gameplay engine, one capable of undermining the group’s sensory certainties, elevates the Valdivian adventure to an essential benchmark for fans of co-op horror and psychological tension. Anyone willing to turn a blind eye to the frustrations of a strict economic progression, provided they tackle exploration strictly shoulder-to-shoulder with teammates armed with microphones, will find in this expedition one of the most authentically memorable and auteur-driven experiences of the current generation.”

“The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is a tense, atmosphere-driven co-op roguelite where a shared sanity system turns every expedition into something unpredictable. The early hours are rough without a full squad, but once the group finds its rhythm, it becomes one of the more distinctive Lovecraftian experiences available in co-op.”

“The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu has an appealing premise, strong visuals, and some initially entertaining hallucination mechanics, but its ideas quickly become repetitive. Weak combat, technical problems, frustrating exploration, and underused Lovecraftian themes leave the experience feeling noticeably underdeveloped.”

“The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is a refreshing co-op horror experience that stands out thanks to its clever insanity mechanics and oppressive Lovecraftian atmosphere. While its story and a few rough edges hold it back, it's an easy recommendation for groups looking for tense, memorable multiplayer sessions.”

“Despite some performance and combat issues, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is a gripping and captivating co-op horror experience that feels novel and fresh thanks to an impressive environment and Sanity system, allowing it to stand out in a saturated market.”

“With a dedicated team, the madness system and the tense, minimap-free co-op loop still shine, even if the setting wears thin and the tech never rises above average.”

“The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu presents several good ideas, but fails in the execution of almost all of them. The first few hours of exploration manage to deliver moments of tension and an immersive atmosphere, but the experience quickly becomes repetitive.”
