How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

It's simple; if you're a Picross fan, you'll enjoy this game. If you're a Story of Seasons fan and you like Picross, you'll really enjoy this game. With over 300+ puzzles, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is a great addition to the growing library of Picross games on the Nintendo Switch. It's highly recommended if you enjoy puzzle games, or pixel art.

While Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is a great title on its own, it may be a little letdown for the franchise veterans who loved playing the cute, little farming title. The unique direction it takes may be new for its fans, but it manages to deliver a fun yet tricky new way to experience this wholesome franchise. The puzzles are tricky, but the farming aspect is nothing more than a theme of the game. Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is a nonogram puzzle game and a great one at that. Some UI improvements would have been amazing but even in its current state, if you love puzzle games and more specifically if you love nonogram puzzle games, you are going to love playing Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons. I can recommend Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons to players who are fans of puzzle games only and for fans of this particular franchise, it may not be up to mark since there is no farm building.

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons may not be the greatest nonogram puzzler available on the Switch, but this is certainly another worthwhile and enjoyable entry in the genre-especially for fans who also love a good farm sim. This is ultimately little more than a nonogram puzzle pack themed after Story of Seasons, but really it doesn't need to be anything else, even if it would be interesting to see how farm sim gameplay elements could be more directly integrated into the gameplay. As long as you're not too bothered by a game experience that feels a little less polished than the Picross series, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is an easy recommendation to any puzzle enthusiasts out there.

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons might appear to be just another nonogram game, but outside of filling out specific boxes, there’s a fair bit to enjoy. I got a real kick about seeing the farm change and grow with the passing days and while the core concept is difficult to change, at least Score Studios tries to do something different with what they have. The farming aspect largely happens in the background, and the graphics are super rough around the edges, but with the inclusion of different-sized grids, random difficulty and larger pictures, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons offers a wealth of content to enjoy. If you’re looking for a lengthy nonogram game, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is an absolute must for the enigmatologists out there.

Nonograms and farm life don't necessarily belong together, but developer Score Studios has made it work, more or less. With cleaner visuals and greater gameplay depth and diversity, including mechanics borrowed from the farming sim genre, it could be even better.

The appeal of what Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons offers is through the aesthetic of Story of Seasons. Each puzzle pulls from the people, the places, and the tools you’ll use through the inspired game. Days pass as you solve puzzles, and you’ll see the characters tending to the farm. This starts to show progress as you work through the seasons.

There are two conditions for someone to enjoy Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons. First, you have to like nonogram puzzles. Second, it helps if you are a fan of Story of Seasons. If these conditions apply to you, as they do for me, you can’t get a better nonogram puzzle experience than in Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons.

I am not going to complain about yet another collection of entertaining and thought-provoking puzzles which fit perfectly on a portable like the Switch, but I am not sure if this was the best way to celebrate the franchise’s history. Are there that many people who love Picross and farming simulators? Whatever the case, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons might not be as robust or polished as the titles in the Picross S series, but it’s still a very entertaining collection of brain teasers.
