How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| All-time Steam reviews | 97% | 93 | 1579 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 90 | 129 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 97% | 93 | 3000 |

“Subnautica is able to grab your attention and draw into the depths of the alien world, but many errors, lack of a map and often incomprehensible tasks, along with a failed final part of the game, cause disappointment.”

“I've been playing Subnautica practically since Early Access and it won me over immediately. There were many times when I was just aimlessly swimming or enjoying the graphics. Other times I was playing with my submarine and chasing various animals. I regularly expanded my underwater base while also watching other players on the forums to see what master bases they had built. The game offers a great deal of fun and will practically become a guzzler of your time because it is simply fun, original and very catchy. In addition, Subnautica Below Zero is now available, which will be set on a frozen planet for a change, and I'm curious to see if the developers will be able to surpass the high bar they've set themselves.”

“When Unknown Worlds announced they were bringing this one to Switch we were hugely excited, this is one of our all-time favourite games after all, but it was excitement tempered with a degree of scepticism as to how on earth they'd manage to cram the entire experience onto Switch in a properly playable manner. As it turns out, we needn't have worried as this is a super solid port that - besides a few loading stutters here and there and some scenery pop-in that's present in every other version of the game - successfully delivers one of the very best survival experiences on any platform to Nintendo's hybrid console.”

“If you enjoy exploring for the sake of exploring then you'll likely enjoy your time with the game, but otherwise this is a title to pass on and never look back at.”

“Subnautica offers a compelling underwater adventure with genuine moments of awe and dread, but middling pacing, grind-heavy systems, and a narrative that overstays its welcome hold it back from true excellence. Solid enough for those drawn to the premise, yet far from essential.”

“Subnautica sees you submerged in a vast and utterly breathtaking underwater world, teeming with secrets and polished off with an unsettling atmosphere that instigates a real sense of thrill as you play. ”

“Subnautica is an atmospheric, wonderful survival game full of surprises. You never know what to expect every time you dive in the depths of the ocean.”

“The best survival game ever released, and an indie game that goes toe to toe with AAA titles out there.”

“Subnautica is a survival and narrative experience that stands as a benchmark for the genre. The Switch version itself certainly has its drawbacks, but not enough to weigh down the experience too much. Some of them do admittedly affect gameplay mildly, but the strength of Subnautica still pushes through.”

“Subnautica is a very, very, very good game for fans of the survival genre. There is a near endless deluge of things to do and see and a vast, dangerous ocean to explore. It’s not uncommon to alternate between sheer dread and speechless wonder as you make your through this underwater wonderland. However, lackluster VR support and an overall density problem in terms of complexity and lack of direction at times hold Subnautica back from true greatness.”

“Unknown Worlds Entertainment have crafted a truly unique underwater adventure/survival title and I am very excited for when they release Subnautica: Below Zero.”

“Subnautica is a survival horror game that should be one of the best of all time, but its optimization harms it drastically. It's immersive, has a chaotic story, enjoyable visuals, incredible sound effects and gameplay that gets almost everything right.”
