How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Ufouria: The Saga 2 is a fun platformer full of cuteness and quirkiness. The colors and music pop, and the platforming is simple yet solid, though the adventure could be considered too easy for veterans.

If you're a fan of '90s action platform games, there's something mildly magical about this. Ufouria 2's sunny world of papercraft and textile-built apparatus is endearing and fun. Its playfulness and zanier elements more recall the era of the Super Nintendo than the NES, and its laid-back approach to linear Metroid-style adventuring is plainly fun. It doesn't ask much from you except to enjoy a little exploration, a very moderate amount of backtracking through very short zones, and an undemanding task of coin collecting as you go. But its reward cycle has an addictive quality, if little else. It's not going to fulfil everyone's desires, and its ease might feel underwhelming to some, but those looking for a new adventure in a very 16-bit fashion will feel well served.

An interesting upgraded version of a quasi-Metroidvania adventure from an earlier era

For a kid's game, Ufouria: The Saga 2 is certainly going to capture the imaginations of its target audience. Fans of the original Ufouria are likely in their late 30s to early 40s and will likely find this to be a very safe and by-the-numbers languid platformer. Anyone who enjoys the likes of Kirby will feel right at home with this surreal and charming Metroidvania, but those that have grown tired of the genre will be better off looking elsewhere for thrills.

Other additions only superficially extend longevity, including a bookcase collection of your progress, and aesthetically upgrading Hebe's House, although Hidden Art scrolls give each of the four characters individualised special moves. Ultimately, Ufouria: The Saga 2 provides no reason to return as compelling as searching for hidden background bubbles to free residents in Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

It's amazing that Sunsoft revisited Ufouria after multiple decades, especially because Ufouria: The Saga 2 feels like a full realization of the endearing game. It won't take you more than a few hours to save the day, but it stays fresh throughout that play time whether you're a newcomer to games or a well-worn Metroidvania veteran. I hope this isn't the last time we see Hebe and his friends.

Ufouria 2’s only drawback is that it is possibly too simple. The game rarely presented a challenge and death was rarely an issue. The mechanics are also barren with only a few things to see and do, and the loop becomes repetitive relatively quickly. Still the music, visuals, and simple charm of the game carry it to completion. This is a game that I adore because of nostalgia, but I think even people unfamiliar with the developer will find plenty to love. The game just oozes that ‘video game’ charm we fell in love with back in the NES days, something that is sorely lacking in a lot of modern titles.

Ufouria: The Saga 2 is charming, cheerful, and relaxing platformer that treads familiar paths from the main menu to the credits. Its moderate difficulty makes it suitable for younger players as well. It doesn’t require long-term dedication, as you can complete the game with leisurely exploration in about 3–4 hours. For my taste, the adventure was even a bit too laid-back, as despite its retro vibes and old-school charm, death didn’t claim me very often during the journey.

Ufouria: The Saga 2 charms, almost delights, then falls flat on its feltwork face. The cutest dud of the year.

Still, short experience or not, Ufouria 2 is an absolute joy for that playtime, and I’ll definitely be glad to revisit this gem for years to come just like I did with that original game.

It’s not that Ufouria: The Saga 2 is a particularly bad game. It’s just that it’s not really much fun, and the gameplay is slow and floaty.
