How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Everybody's Golf Hot Shots clearly needed more practice before teeing off on the Nintendo Switch. Thankfully, some necessary updates have significantly improved the game; however, one could argue that even more improvements are desired. I'm glad I held off on this review, because now (as a fan of video golf), I can appreciate it as a pretty good and content-rich title. Those less forgiving of its restrictive unlockable structure might bump it down a point, and wait to grab the game on sale.

Everybody's Golf Hot Shots carries on the series traditions with solid courses, a robust character levelling system, and the appropriate level of silliness. However, the experience is uneven on Switch. Fans may enjoy it in short bursts, but technical issues and patchy presentation stop it from being the standout entry it could have been.

After almost 8 years, “Everybody’s Golf” is back in a very “back to its roots” format. I, for one, can’t complain. HYDE, Inc.’s work is exceptional, bringing some refreshing new mechanics, good variety of characters and courses. And, for the first time on PC. It is a treat whether you have poured hundreds of hours on previous titles or just starting with the franchise.

Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots is a good golf game. It’s charming, colorful, and mechanically satisfying. But it falls short of greatness, being technically unpolished, progression-heavy, and lacking the creative fire of earlier entries.

While it’s great to see the popular series make its way to Switch, overall it has its ups and downs

Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots is the best golfing game on Nintendo Switch, supported by fantastic gameplay that sticks to genre conventions, and a plethora of customisation options and content to experience. Unfortunately, the vast majority of this content is locked behind a poorly-paced single-player experience that forces players to repeat the same holes with the same characters over and over again, all presented with a passable but technically poor presentation.

Everybody’s Golf offers a simple yet enjoyable experience, with easy-to-learn gameplay that still requires precision and skill. The variety of shots and courses adds real challenge. While the game has a vast amount of characters, tools, and helpers, much of this content is locked and requires repeated play in World Tour and Challenge Mode.

For longtime fans of the franchise, there's a certain charm in revisiting familiar mechanics and reliving the relaxed atmosphere that characterized the series. However, this nostalgia is short-lived, as the game quickly demonstrates its limitations, with a repetitive structure that's uninspiring for extended play.

Everybody's Golf Hot Shots is a welcomed return to the series. The gameplay is easy, immediate, and fun, yet also difficult to master at higher levels. What left me perplexed was the graphics and technical aspects, which lacked in every way. It could and should have been better, especially since its predecessor is much more refined in this. It's still a solid title if you're looking for an arcade golf experience.

Bandai Namco and HYDE, Inc. have done right by the fanbase. Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots hits a solid drive with great customization options, ten diverse 18-hole courses, 25+ characters, a plethora of Wacky Golf modes, and even online play.

Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots is a decent attempt to bring back the franchise PlayStation fans know and love, but there are a few rough edges that prevent it from being anything more. While the core gameplay remains fun and accessible most of the time, inconsistent technical performance interferes with some of the fundamentals, and a general lack of polish across physics and visuals get in the way. There's absolutely still fun to be had in this cheerful title, but it's a fair way from the series' best.

Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots is the game that fans of the franchise have been waiting for all these years, keeping all the elements that made the series so beloved during the golden era of the PS1 and PS2, proving that there's still room for arcade sports games that prioritize fun above all else.
