How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 70 | 93 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 58% | 58 | 179 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 63% | 62 | 7 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is not the most successful experiment. The reimagining of the walking simulator's core principles did not go as planned.”

“Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a game that will appeal to only a small group of people. With puzzles that take hours to solve, many technical issues, and a misunderstanding of what makes the Lovecraftian Mythos interesting many gamers will be turned away from this title. However, those who love the type of long-form puzzles the game offers may fall in love with its unique design and mechanics.”

“If developer Big Bad Wolf can iron out the games bugs and issues, then they have a very strong contender for one of the best Lovecraftian games on the market. Overall, Cthulhu The Cosmic Abyss is a wonderful delve into cosmic insanity and the Cthulhu Mythos and a great foundation to build future adventures of madness upon.”

“Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a game that promises a lot but ultimately fails to deliver on its potential, resulting in an adventure that won’t leave a lasting impression, mainly due to its weak story and character development. That said, the game isn’t all bad, as it incorporates some very creative gameplay ideas, even if these don’t quite manage to shine.”

“Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss has a ton of potential with its setting, narrative, and investigation mechanics, but buggy save-states and jank make it a frustrating experience.”

“Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a disappointing case of a game with an interesting premise being pulled under by technical problems. The investigation elements, occult mystery, and deep-sea setting all had the potential to create something memorable. Sadly, confusing mechanics and serious bugs stop the game from reaching that potential. The game-breaking glitch I encountered makes it impossible to give this a strong recommendation. Once fixes arrive, this may be worth revisiting, especially for players who enjoy slower investigation games. But in its current state, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a game I would wait on.”

“Cthulhu: Cosmic Abyss is a great example on how to make a game centred around interactive storytelling fun. While it may lack some of the action and combat orientated takes of previous Cthulhu games, Cosmic Abyss thrives in its environmental storytelling and deep investigative mechanics, that give it an addictive, and engaging style of gameplay that is rarely explored in gaming. Strong supportive characters, with a likeable main protagonist, made me feel connected to them, and their personal battles they went through with the Eldritch God Cthulhu.”

“Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss delivers an intriguing and often unsettling narrative while delivering some really challenging puzzles - however, it's not without its flaws.”

“As a relative noob to Cthulhu’s lore, I really loved Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss because of its more psychological horror nature. It would be easy to make this into a monster blasting, shooter type but the choice to slow things down, and tell a more methodical story was a great thing. As a fan of the investigative type games this was a joy to play despite the issues with performance I had on Series X.”

“For those waiting for the next gem in the cosmic horror genre, *Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss* is unfortunately not it.”

“H.P. Lovecraft’s work still has legions of devoted fans, including within the gaming community. They will therefore be delighted with Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, which will not only scare them but also provide plenty of exploration. It cleverly expands the aforementioned universe with futuristic elements, although at present it has not managed to avoid certain technical glitches.”

“In the end, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is fine. The lack of combat combined with a lack of guidance creates a challenging and refreshing experience for most - and frustrating for some. The overall presentation is fine, despite the game's use of an engine intended to deliver stunning visuals. The game will appeal to those who are fascinated with the Cthulhu universe more than those looking for thrills and scares. Players won't feel compelled to stick with this title for long sessions at a time.”
