How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Playing Yakuza 0 has been a revelation, one tinged with excitement at the prospect of what I’ve been missing and can now experience. As a first foray into Sega’s world of gangsters, BDSM, and fishing minigames, it’s been an utter joy to play.”

“This 15-year-old game has aged well, with new cutscenes and other enhancements contributing to an epic, movie-like quality to the action. This prequel makes the perfect first entry for the Switch 2.”

“"The beginning of a great saga, now in its finest form."”

“Yakuza 0 - one of the most beautiful, detailed and exciting stories in the multi-volume series about life in Japan and its shadow side. Detalization of rituals and complicated hierarchical system of relationships, coupled with romantic image of "bad boy" character, give us an idea that the game is being sponsored by one of the yakuza's tops -- how else to explain so much attention to the way of life of the japanese criminal authority? And, of course, Yakuza 0 is currently the most polished (excluding bad controls in mini-games section) and best game in the series, with which you shoud start discovering the amazing world of Japan. Especially since Yakuza 1 remake, Yakuza Kiwami, that uses Yakuza 0's battle system and many of its characters, is on the way.”

“Yakuza 0 is such a great crime drama that it's impossible to put it away until it's finished. Also amazing side missions, fun mini-games, difficult challenges, better try it yourself.”

“Yakuza 0 is a good place to start if you want to get to know the series now, but it's also a treat for fans, as it stays true to what the series represents. There's a lot of content to explore and check out, and the graphics get better with each version. Kazuma is well represented on Sony's current generation of consoles, and you'll have hours and hours of fun playing the game controlling the guy, in a good way, of course.”

“Yakuza 0 marks the franchise's first foray onto PC and does so confidently. Bursting with content and an intriguing storyline it's only held back by a few annoying bugs.”

“Yakuza 0 is an easy recommendation for PS4 and PS4 Pro owners alike. A strong story, activities aplenty, and solid core combat, it’s the perfect start to gaming in 2017. Essential for PS4 owners and for the rest, a perfect reason to get one.”

“Yakuza 0 is the best of the traditional-styled Yakuza games, with the most complex story and interesting characters of the lot. It's also the ideal place for newcomers to get started with this weird and wonderful series. The new multiplayer mode is a little throwaway, for sure, and the fights do get repetitive (turn-based Yakuza FTW), but otherwise, this is a phenomenal port of an epic adventure that's now my favourite way to get down on the mean streets of 1980s Tokyo and Osaka.”

“An intriguing story followed by an impressively polished game, Yakuza 0 offers a glimpse of a bustling 80s Japan and its underworld.”

“Yakuza 0’s overarching faithfulness to its time and place in history provides fascinating insight into the time, and its over-the-top cutscenes and climactic fights quickly endeared me to the series. A hefty batch of side-games and engaging, well-paced combat roped me in and sold me on my first ever Yakuza experience, but the vibrancy of its semi-fictional Japan will be what I remember most. Yakuza 0 doubles-down on series’ signature combination of hyperbolic action and self-aware comedy, while providing an honest window into a major period in recent Japanese history, and does so flawlessly.”

“If you’ve never played a Yakuza game, Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is your perfect entry point. If you have played it, this version gives you the excuse, and the enhancements, to revisit it in the best way possible. Between the polished visuals, new content, flawless performance, and the added portability of the Switch 2, this is more than a re-release, it’s a celebration of what made Yakuza 0 great in the first place.”
