How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“As a platformer-meets-horror game, Love Eternal is equal parts aggravating and enlightening. The story is opaque, with an ending that had me scratching my head, and yet I found myself wildly engrossed. The platforming is woefully undercooked, but a mid-game genre shift almost (almost) redeems the entire experience. Add in a late-game curveball that, while I won’t spoil here, is bound to invite plenty of speculation, and Love Eternal is a work of art that deserves praise. Now, is that art fun? Is it something I’d recommend to a majority of people, or even to diehard platformer fans? I can’t say I would, the goods just aren’t here. However, if you’re willing to compromise your sanity a bit, you’ll find a dimension to Love Eternal that’s worth exploring.”

“Love Eternal is a game that will hit with certain people who enjoy these types of games where they can get through the levels the fastest or go through the entire game without dying. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I wanted to catch chunks of the story but it didn't give me enough to keep a steady pace to keep my interest.”

“With its challenging platforming, brlka offers a demanding psychological horror experience with a cryptic narrative that evokes emotions with every challenge overcome. On the other hand, about halfway through, the difficulty spikes to the point of becoming frustrating, leading to an inevitable sense of exhaustion. However, when all the pieces fall into place, the experience borders on the memorable. It’s beautiful, tough to crack, but irresistibly satisfying. A title recommended for those who enjoy demanding challenges and stories open to interpretation.”

“The platforming elements of Love Eternal are delightfully frustrating fun with a limited set of mechanics put to creative and clean use. Multiple levels had me holding my breath, gritting my teeth, and cursing the wayward god who founded the whole endeavour.The hand-drawn levels are as beautiful as their challenges are frustrating. Unfortunately, an overly ambitious narrative coupled with a strange mid-game shift mars the game's myriad charms.”

“The biggest challenge in talking about Love Eternal is in trying to make sense of its failings. It isn’t awful, but worse: it’s just boring. It doesn’t offer much to chew on in terms of mechanics or story. At its best there’s a sense that Love Eternal has something it desperately wants to say, but it grasps at straws to say it and perpetually comes up short. So what else is there to say about a game as shallow as Love Eternal? Only that it’s like Celeste meets Silent Hill, Gris, but grimdark.”

“LOVE ETERNAL is a truly unique platformer that perfects its core mechanics and building upon them creates a very special horror atmosphere. Players will find themselves in repeatedly jaw-dropping situations at the constant barrage of twists and turns. Toby Alden has crafted not only a sometimes incredibly difficult and challenging game but above all a truly special experience. The only minor flaw for me was the screen's brief blackout each time I die which can be a bit tiring on the eyes after a while. If you have a high frustration tolerance for the tough parts you should definitely give it a go.”
