How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Ultimately, For Honor doesn't focus on making sense or being historically accurate, it just puts cool stuff in a field and tells it to go out and fight. Everything outside of playing online sucks, like microtransactions, customization options and single-player. Hell, the multiplayer itself sometimes sucks when it pairs you with a badly selected host player. However, when the game is working and you're murdering a single human player while screaming "FOOOOOOOOOOOR HOOOOOOOOOOOONOOOOOOOOOOOR" at their corpse, it's pretty damn rewarding.”

“For Honor feels like a Free-to-play title that deliberately was turned into a retail product, but kept the elements of a Pay-to-win system. Unfortunately, except for graphics and animations, the single-player mode cannot offer pleasant revelations and the multiplayer mode, instead of beautiful battles, reminds only white trash street fights. The problem with an imbalance of characters in duels makes the situation even worse, but we hope that most errors will be fixed with future updates. If this happens, you can give the game a chance, but for now we recommend postponing the purchase or waiting for discounts to devote time to other more worthy projects.”

“Unusual and for the most part unique hybrid of action and fighting games. And it's freshness is one of the main reasons why it stays fun for a long time. Unfortunately, disconnects and lags during the multiplayer matches are not that uncommon.”

“For Honor is a good game and a good debut for Ubisoft in a new genre. The game features combat in open, open-ended, yet limited settings, and uses three clans, with a system of 12 distinct classes, with good variety and combination. Aside from a few issues, such as the confusing and cluttered menus, the adventure is worth checking out and enjoying for those who enjoy the multiplayer combat genre.”

“For Honor is a truly engaging experience when you're out on the battlefield, and playing mind-games with your opponents. It goes beyond its contemporaries by adding depth to combat in a way that feels true to reality. But all of its niceties threaten to be overshadowed by the poor taste of the non-playable elements, which seem to be becoming a bit of norm with top-tier video games.”

“A prime example of "Easy to learn, hard to master" kind of a game, with hard, but extremely rewarding and challenging gameplay mechanics.”

“Although the combat is extremely enjoyable, For Honor lacks focus and tends to rely on giving players too much advantage in most type of matches instead of a proper learning curve.”

“For Honor is a really interesting game with enormous potential. The combat system is tremendous - you can learn it in a few minutes but mastering all the possibilities is a task for dozens of hours. Unfortunately, almost everything else is flawed - weak single player campaign, network issues, dull domination mode and irritating microtrasactions. If For Honor takes the same route as The Division, we'll get an excellent game further down the road.”

“It's already a struggle just to get from one match to the next, but pile on a woefully imbalanced roster, annoying environmental hazards, overpowered power ups and feats, imperfect clunky controls; there are so many pitfalls. Maybe one of them wouldn't be so bad but there are so many flaws that I would rather just play something else.”

“I think, however, that I ended up liking it in spite of itself, and could feel the pushback more and more aggressively the longer I played it. It is an enjoyable game, and I have no qualms about calling it one of the best fighting games of this gen, but it does not solve the problems that keep the genre from being for everyone and, in some cases, accelerates those issues. Perhaps that is too heavy a burden for any game to carry, but I still find myself wishing For Honor were capable of it.”

“Ubisoft has managed to bring a fresh experience to the genre. It is true that we've already seen medieval themed games, but not a single one like For Honor. Solid gameplay mechanics, interesting visuals and remarkable sound effects. However, it is a shame that it lacks content, with a single player campaign that adds nothing to the experience. These lacking elements can overshadow Ubisoft's good work and bury the game before they expect.”
