How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“In short, Hirogami is a 3D platformer that stands out for its creative visual design and original concept of transforming origami into a gameplay mechanic. The artistic identity is strong, but stumbles on crucial points: an unengaging narrative, uncharismatic characters, and a camera that compromises the experience at various points. Even so, the level design and the variety of forms Hiro can assume keep the game functional and engaging throughout much of the campaign. Like origami, Hirogami is impressive from afar for its aesthetics, but when handled, it reveals structural weaknesses.”

“Hirogami is a title that stands out for its wonderful artwork, capable of transporting the player into a vibrant, living world of origami. However, despite its aesthetic promise, the game fails to maintain the same quality in every aspect, with combat mechanics that are cumbersome and unintuitive, thus breaking the rhythm of the adventure. This work is a recommended experience for lovers of art and exploration, but it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for what it could have been.”

“An origami-themed puzzle-platformer that's a treat for the eyes, but mechanically crumples under any scrutiny.”

“Hirogami is a great first effort from Bandai Namco Singapore and Bandai Namco Malaysia in the mellow-level 3D platforming department. Even with some of its quirky bugs that hamper my platforming by a tad, it's still a worthy look for its aesthetics and paper animal-shifting gameplay that requires some semblance of skill.”

“Hirogami is a fine example of an underused aesthetic, and its beautifully styled origami world looks great on PS5. The platforming is a bit messy and there isn't much variety on offer, but for those who prefer a bit more style than substance, it's well worth a look.”

“Hirogami is a game of fleeting brilliance, where moments of joy like leaping as a frog through a papery forest or uncovering a hidden shrine are undercut by clunky mechanics and unpolished edges. It’s a heartfelt effort from a small team, and the art direction alone makes it worth a glance. Like a sloppily-folded origami crane, though, it collapses, caught between ambition and execution.”

“Hirogami blends origami artistry with platforming creativity, offering a relaxing and visually stunning adventure filled with clever transformations. Its gorgeous presentation, great sound design, and beginner-friendly gameplay make it easy to love, even if uneven difficulty and repetitive music hold it back from greatness.”

“Hirogami is a beautiful homage to the ancient Japanese art of paper folding but it doesn't forget that entertaining gameplay is just as important for a good game as its pretty visuals. On my first playthrough of the levels, I had to restrain myself from being too meticulous, as there's usually a mission hidden behind abilities you don't yet possess. However, because the game and levels aren't particularly long I never felt annoyed about having to revisit certain sections. In fact I looked forward to it. The story is pretty basic but that's totally fine and the game runs flawlessly from a technical standpoint without throwing up any unnecessary obstacles.”

“At its best, Hirogami is a great platformer that impresses with its origami visuals and mechanics. But it's often too frustrating an experience for me to recommend it without reservation.”

“Hirogami focuses on a varied gameplay flow consisting of exploration, collecting, and switching between origami shapes. The gameplay is very diverse. Each level has a specific focus, which is strongly represented in the mostly short sections. Each level can be played multiple times thanks to the additional challenges. The paper look, which is consistently implemented, gives the game a distinctive appearance. Sometimes it is necessary to switch shapes quickly, which can be a little awkward due to the button layout. However, the relatively low level of difficulty allows you to progress quickly. If you are looking for an entertaining but solid mix of puzzles, combat, and skill, Hirogami is the game for you.”

“Hirogami follows in the footprints of other successful papercraft videogames such as Tearaway and Paper Mario. While it nails the pleasing handmade aesthetic of those titles, the shapeshifting gameplay never quite pins down the precision required. It’s not a write-off, more of a write-down of a crafty idea.”

“Hirogami has a bright world to explore and some interesting gameplay ideas to fold over. However, the art of it all is a little lost when the developers' over ambition doesn't come to fruition in the game. It plays old, feels like it too, and despite being a throwback to the PS2 era, it doesn't have the tact and precision to pull off this nostalgia trip.”
