How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

EA SPORTS Madden NFL 26: Madden NFL 26 won’t silence the critics, but for the first time in years, it feels like EA’s listening. Built from Sundays, and finally built with some real heart.

It's been so long since a Madden game has been playable on a Nintendo device that pretty much anything would've satisfied NFL fans. Thankfully, Madden NFL 26 happens to be a good game that offers a massive playbook of depth and content. Just be prepared to spend time on the practice squad while you get up to speed.

Server issues at launch aside, and with the loss of cross-play noted, Madden 26 is a very solid port of one of the best outings for this franchise in recent memory. Yes, you'll need to get used to a drop in the frame rate to 40fps on Switch 2, but it's a reasonable downgrade in order to get this type of game running as well as it does on a portable machine. It really is a very close match in all other ways to other consoles. For newcomers, this is one of the best Madden games I've played in terms of teaching you the ropes, and for the returning hardcore, the improvements on the pitch, and with regards to presentation, should impress where its predecessor felt a bit lacking.

Having been away from the series for a decade or two, this edition impresses, and is overwhelming, but is also obviously a lot of game for football fans to enjoy

However, if you're looking for a different American football experience, College Football 26 might be a better option. There, everything pulsates: the environment, the modes, the sounds, and the gameplay. Here, things are more restrained, more mechanical, and at times, rigid.

After years of ups and downs, Madden NFL 26 seems to be on the right track. The improvements are noticeable, both in the visuals, gameplay, and presentation. It's finally a next-gen release, and the best part is that it has a homegrown competition that, in theory, should drive development to improve and meet fan demands. It will undoubtedly be a good season for football fans.

EA Sports Madden NFL 26 is on par with College Football this year. Both careers are once again very well implemented, if you ignore the interviews, which are still silent. Superstar impresses with its many extras and its successful connection system, while Franchise scores points above all with the numerous opportunities for influence that we have as team managers. I also really liked the improved presentation on the field, which makes the walk-ons more spectacular and now also individually staged for each team. In addition, the optimized weather system really makes an impression. Furthermore, improvements can also be seen in the animations, which make the game even more realistic, and several new control options and plays have also made their way into the simulation. Overall, Madden NFL 26 is a successful package that has improved on the somewhat weaker atmosphere of the past.

But the gameplay, easily the most important part, is not an issue. It's evident to me that the team at EA Sports tried to do what they could to make a solid version of Madden early in the life of the Switch 2. It's rough around the edges, but it's the most feature parity a Madden game has had on a Nintendo platform since the age of the GameCube. I hope that, unlike Madden on 3DS and Wii U, we get to see EA Sports take another crack at bringing Madden to Switch 2 because the initial release captures the fun of the game and future releases could refine and improve all of the technical aspects.

Madden 26 is the biggest upgrade in years. The revamped franchise mode is great, the on-field mechanics are a welcome change, and it just feels good to play. I ran into several glitches early on, that seem to have been ironed out over the weeks after release.

All that said, the biggest compliment I can give EA Sports Madden NFL 26is that I look forward to playing it again. That wasn't always the case. But for all its shortcomings, I still like seeing my created player running around on the screen as part of a beautiful and immersive on-field presentation. I enjoy the football being played. I like having the sense of control over the fate of my team, and I like all of the options Franchise Mode presents for me to exercise that control. I enjoy Madden again, and that's a start.

I’ve been burned by Madden before. Year after year, EA promises innovation, and year after year, I end up watching my offensive line forget how physics works while my quarterback moonwalks into a sack. So, when Madden NFL 26 dropped with early access and a laundry list of “game-changing” features, I approached it like a cornerback on a double move, hesitant, skeptical, and ready to get beat. Turns out, this year’s entry actually delivers.
