How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

A fascinating and creative physics-based sandbox for medieval warfare, but a cumbersome one

Make some machines and test it. Creative game is after 5 years finished at last. There is strange physics and there should be more items, but still not bad.

Besiege's physics-based experimental mayhem is a lot of fun for a low price. If you've yet to play this on PC or Xbox, now is the perfect time to get creating!

[...] However, after a few levels, I was unfortunately left feeling disappointed. Whilst the simple levels do have their charm, after a while I find myself missing larger areas where I can give free rein to my destructive urges. I also miss more detailed views of the physics calculations so that I can make my weapons even more devastating.

While Besiege has its charm, it’s a tough recommendation for most players. I think the building is cool, the single-player can be fun, and the workshop is a great addition. That said, the game is hindered by its controls, lack of content, and price. This is definitely a niche title that I’m sure several players could pour dozens of hours into. So, if the game looks interesting, it might be worth a try, especially if it goes on sale. Otherwise, I can’t recommend the game. It’s an easy pass.

Conquering enemy fortresses has never been so much fun. Entertaining for everyone, really. [Issue#302]

Besiege Console Edition, although not outstanding, is a very enjoyable title, perfect for quiet winter evenings. The game works well both in short sessions and during longer ones. The only thing left to complete the experience is hope that the mentioned technical issues will be fixed in the future. I wholeheartedly recommend Besiege to fans of construction, destruction, and those who love to tinker!

Besiege for the Nintendo Switch is a port of the perfected PC version from four years ago. The chaos, fun and crazy challenges are just as fun on the Nintendo Switch as they are on the PC. The game works great in handheld mode with the touchscreen and is the perfect way to play the game on the go. It looks neat, runs smoothly and the controls are nice and intuitive. It is a shame that the many extras, expansions, multiplayer and community content are completely missing here. This would have made the port even better than the PC version.

There’s a lot of fun in optimizing our machines’ destructive potential while adhering to laws of physics and then unleashing our creations upon tiny villagers and knights. [05/2020, p.60]

I had a very fun time tinkering with a variety of menacing machines in Besiege. It's quite a clever and cathartic experience. 🛠️
