How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Call of Cthulhu may have some issues, but its storyline and aesthetic provide for a really engrossing experience. Even so, the graphics and animation are pretty bad, especially for a full-fledged 2018 release.”

“Call of Cthulhu is a good game with a bunch of Easter eggs for fans of the popular universe, nonlinearity and interesting characters, which suffers from weak stealth and unnecessary shooting elements.”

“Yet another mediocre horror, but with RPG elements this time.”

“Call of Cthulhu's survival-horror elements don't come close to capturing the existential unease of Lovecraft's original story. Rather, they simply feel exploitative.”

“Call of Cthulhu is an eight to ten hour game full of secrets and mysteries. The player needs to be careful about his decisions, as they will lead him to one of four endings. And not all of them end with a happy ending.”

“Turn down the lights, pour yourself a measure of laudanum, and settle in for a solid tale of intrigue and insanity well-rooted in Lovecraft's lore.”

“Call of Cthulhu manages to deliver a game that's ripe with atmosphere but is built upon tried-and-true tropes of the genre that never really manage to evolve beyond the scope of what's already been seen and heard before. Paired with some technical hiccups, we can say that Call of Cthulhu is only really for truly dedicated fans of Lovecraft; everyone else is advised to look elsewhere for their entertainment.”

“Call of Cthulhu lacks what makes most of Lovecraft’s stories interesting: the true descent into madness and the human fragility. It overly relies on uninteresting characters and a plot that is so “on the nose” that you can see its twists coming a mile away.”

“Call of Cthulhu doesn't deliver in several departments (the technology, as well as some of the gameplay elements are rather poor), but a superb atmosphere, a good storyline and a few great ideas make this game what it is - a solid piece of entertaining code. I had fun and rooted for Edward during his crazy investigation. If you feel the call, answer it.”

“Outside of the stealth and action segments, none of the game is out and out bad, but a lot of it comes off as more middling than a success.”

“Overall, Call of Cthulhu is just average. Its decent story and adequate horror elements struggle against extremely hit-and-miss writing and game design that often throws the player into subpar stealth sequences. It's not without its merits, but for a game that promises Lovecraft in its most pure, most uncut Lovecraftian form to feel “competent,” at best, is its own sort of horror.”

“It’s an interesting game that takes advantages of its strengths. From the decision making to the RPG elements, it blends well enough to keep you going for more. And even with a few hitches that makes some minor complaints, it goes through so much detail in the storytelling without it being overbearing and long to make you yawn. However, as a horror game, it doesn’t particularly give you the scare factor that others would. The multiple possible scenarios bear fruit a few endings as well. So will you embrace your fate or will you struggle until the end?”
