How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (Metacritic) | – | 85 | 6 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 95% | 90 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 90 | 10 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 95% | 90 | 2199 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.5, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 21,471 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“That aside, this is the best time I've had with an adventure game, 2D or 3D, big or small budget, this year. With an original charm all its own, Machinarium is a real winner and an instant classic.”

“However these shortcomings of our metal clad hero does not change the fact that Machinarium is a great addition to the classic adventure genre, and should be played by anyone who enjoys these types of games.”

“Aside from the lameness of the tutorial minigame and the occasional obtuse puzzle, this is indie gold. A fantastic, rewarding, deeply satisfying adventure with one of the most beautiful game worlds you'll see this side of a team Ico game; it's a rare must-play.”

“It's as accessible and charming as any Pixar creation, and it's completely won over this reviewer's heart. [Christmas 2009, p.95]”

“Machinarium is a great, sweet, charming game. Period. Yep, sometimes, it's too difficult, but the idea of the built-in walkthrough is awesome, you'll understand every emotion and hint without having to read a single word, and it's starring a robot. Yeah.”

“Machinarium is a treat for the senses that demands more of your brain, a paradoxically gentle yet punishing riff on a genre that, until now, had been revived but sadly defanged for modern players.”

“The unusual graphics are nice, and the puzzles are not only mindboggling, but also great fun. Machinarium shows what you can do with simplest methods.”

“Old school graphic adventure that doesn't pull its punches with either the puzzles or the gorgeous art.”
