How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The gameplay of Mushroom Wars 2 is capable, there just isn't a lot to it. Despite the game's one-hundred plus levels, there's not enough deviation to justify sitting down with it for an extended period of time. It's more suited for playing a level or two while killing a brief amount of time. And that's okay, the game was designed for mobile platforms after all. For fifteen dollars, however, you can get a much more fulfilling experience.

A sumptuous feast in multiplayer, but a bit bland and monotonous when going solo, Mushroom Wars 2 is nonetheless an accessible and deep and enjoyable real-time strategy experience. There is plenty to dig into, especially if you enter the online competitive arena. Although the game does show it's mobile roots on occasion as the single-player campaign is ironically 'by the numbers', Mushroom Wars 2 is definitely a dish best served cold, and with a group of fun guys or gals.

Don’t mistake its lovely characters and catchy soundtrack for a superficial strategy game. Mushroom Wars 2 packs a lot of punch and creates interesting scenarios of constant unit micromanaging and how to excel at zone control. Easy to pick up and learn, hard to master.

For its novelty alone on the RTS-starved Switch Mushroom Wars 2 has some merit to it, and will no doubt make strategy fans who’ve felt poorly represented a bit happier. That said, this feels more like a stripped-down strategy experience overall, making the origins of the series coming from the mobile space not a great surprise. As long as the online community gets rolling it should be a worthwhile investment, but the more you’re likely to find yourself playing it in single-player mode the more likely you are to get a bit bored with the repetition.

Beautiful music and cute, unique visuals aren't enough to save Mushroom Wars 2 from its flaws.

Mushroom Wars is a fun take on the real-time strategy genre that would be perfect for portable play if it weren't for some technical issues. Pacing can be a real annoyance, especially early on, but gradually fades as you progress further into the game. On the bright side, it is simple to learn, and its bite-sized levels are very addicting once you get going.

Mushroom Wars 2 is an addictive game suitable for players who want to practice their strategic skills in short, but challenging battles. Perfect for travelling with Nintendo Switch in full version, it only fails to utilize the touch screen to improve the game controls. Hero skills and mission variability compensate the lacking story.

All in all while I can’t say Mushroom Wars 2 changed my mind about the genre, it’s certainly a great game for fans of it. There is a ton of content here and the multiplayer is robust and a ton of fun. I had a little issue with the controls here, but I feel that was mostly me being used to RTS games on a PC rather than a console. If you’re not a fan of this genre, you should probably avoid this one, but fans should certainly look into picking this one up at the $19.99 price tag. You will get a lot of bang for your buck.
