How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 62 | 3 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 69% | 66 | 172 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 0% | 15 | 0 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Pair all of the above with spritework and sound design that feels amateurish, and Skautfold: Usurper ultimately comes off as more of a mid-effort flash game than a properly polished new eShop release. There are flashes of fun every now and then, but none of the ideas or concepts here cohere into something that’s worth your time. If you’re looking for a solid Metroidvania with Soulslike elements, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, and Salt and Sanctuary all offer up a substantially more polished and enjoyable experience.”

“While it has a bit of old-school flair, this doesn’t stand shoulder to shoulder with far more refined titles in the space”

“Skautfold: Usurper is a Metroidvania that misses the mark with every attempt. from the boring gameplay that also feels unbalanced to the bad story, there is little to find that grabs the attention.”

“Skautfold: Usurper tries to be a memorable metroidvania, but everything is delivered in such a shallow way that at no time does the game really show what it came for. An "ok" option just in case you are an orphan of the genre and find it in a good sale.”

“Skautfold: Usurper is a tough Metroidvania and Souls-like hybrid. Consequently, it is cruel, unfair, and will drive you insane. However, if you can put up with its challenging ways, you'll discover a rewarding experience that will break your balls.”

“Skautfold: Usurper is a reasonable metroidvania in its proposal and fulfills what is expected of a game of the genre. However, the various small issues stack up to keep the experience from standing out within a market that has much better games already available. At the moment, it is only recommended for those who are very fond of the style.”

“With an intriguing premise and unique visuals, it's a shame that Skautfold: Usurper has so many gameplay issues. For those who are huge fans of the aforementioned genres, there are some pleasant aspects here, but patience is required in the course of the first few hours of gameplay. For those who want to know titles of this kind, there are friendlier and more accessible options on the market.”

“Skautfold: Usurper is a game that will do a lot to endear itself to your gaming heart. It looks great, it plays very well and the challenge is all too real, but the rewards are there if you can learn how to risk it all on the Guard bar.”

“Skautfold: Usurper is a proposal that shines by itself before the extensive number of similar options, it does not become perfect and much less comes to revolutionize the trite genre, but if it offers us the necessary fun such as offering an opportunity and not letting it pass.”

“The pixel art is done quite well, as is the smooth animations and overall aesthetic. While a few doorways can blend together with the background and make it difficult to discern, the Lovecraftian Castlevania setting is done quite well, complete with fitting and moody soundtrack. If you’ve been itching for a new Metroidvania and want to try some unique combat mechanics, Skautfold: Usurper is a perfectly serviceable recommendation under $20.”
