How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Darksiders III is a "hello from the past" with an interesting story, controversial design decisions, challenging and not always obvious puzzles, and a clearly limited budget. Blurry graphics and optimization problems spoil the impression, but if you'll stay with the game for a first few hours of gameplay, then Darksiders 3 will offer you a cool character, epic battles with beautiful bosses, good puzzles and a deep world exploration. In this case, the game will still be able to keep your attention until the very end.

Darksiders III is smaller than its predecessors in terms of scale, but still a well-crafted and fun action-adventure. A rare thing these days.

Do you like hacking? Are you a fan of slashing? Darksiders III fails to live up to its potential, but fans of the series will ultimately still enjoy the third installment depicting the sagas of the Four Horsemen.

All in all, Darksiders 3 is a stunning return to a franchise that we'd love to see more of. The stellar game world, intriguing story, and slick gameplay make it one worth checking out even if you're not a fan of the series. It's a surprise Darksiders 3 exists. And a welcome one at that.

Darksiders III on Switch is a poor port of a distinctly average entry in the series. Constant technical issues make fighting and platforming more frustrating than fun, long loading times follow every death and the further along you get, the worse these issues seem to become. It's a shame as we're pretty big fans of the series in general, but if you have any other means of playing this one we'd advise you give this clunky version a miss.

In ways, Darksiders III founds its identity with Fury, a more mature and interesting character. Sadly, everything else falls short of what you expect from a Darksiders title.

Despite small budget and rather unimposing preview materials, Darksiders III turns out a great game. Gunfire Games deserve a standing ovation and a truckload of money. D3 is a game born from true passion and genuine love for the series.

The game may not manage to surpass what has come before, but, if nothing else, it does manage to hold its own and provide series fans with another fun chapter in the series.

If you don’t already like hack and slash titles, and the Darksiders series specifically, this third installment certainly won’t make you a fan.

Third time's not the charm in the case of Darksiders III, which is a - mostly - mediocre third entry in a line of games that weren't really that great to begin with. The quality of the Switch port doesn't help either, not so much because of its downgraded visuals, but because of its severe frame rate dips, and long load times, something that plagued the original versions as well. At least Fury looks cool…
