How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Hellpoint is still not a fully polished project, unpleasantly surprising with wonky hitboxes, terrible jumping mechanics and poor attack animations. It can still appeal to fans of Souls-like games, if they have already tried all the hits in this genre and dream of a dark story in the vast expanses of cold and boundless space.

Hellpoint had the potential to be something more than it is. Every prerequisite for a good Dark Souls clone was there and the basic gameplay or combat system feels good enough. Alas, the game doesn't excel at anything and isn't capable to rise from the shadow of its stronger opponents.

If you are a Souls fan, you should definitely try Hellpoint. It is clunky at times, but absolutely fun to explore.

Hellpoint is a great Souls game that will keep you entertained for hours. You have a large variety of armor, weapons and enemies. The combat system is not too complex, but not too demanding, so it is a good choice for beginners. This title really deserves a place in your library, and if you like these types of games, it's almost a must. Hellpoint will definitely offer you more mechanics and keep you entertained for longer than, for example, Mortal Shell.

Hellpoint is a reasonably decent sci-fi/Soulslike effort that sticks closely to FromSoftware's well-worn formula whilst introducing a few neat new tricks and twists of its own. The combat here is solid, the space station setting often spectacular and the narrative as enticingly cryptic as you'd expect from the genre. However, the whole thing suffers massively due to myriad technical issues on Switch. Constant crashes to the console's homescreen, a seriously flaky framerate, long loading times and a pretty huge graphical downgrade result in an experience that's infuriating for all the wrong reasons and one that it's almost impossible to recommend in its current form. Here's hoping Cradle Games has some big patches incoming.

The end result is a highly entertaining and challenging take on a modern classic, with both innovations and rough edges alike.

Quebec City based developers, Cradle Games, didn’t hold back showing where the roots and inspiration behind their recent title, Hellpoint, had originated. As someone who has sunk A LOT of hours into the Dark Souls games, I was pretty excited to see what this one had to offer, and if it was worthy enough to be placed among the ranks of this newer ‘genre’.

While it doesn't match up with the best of the sub-genre, due to performance issues and generic designs, it provides enough exploration opportunities, deadly combat scenarios, and mysteries to satisfy hardcore fans.

I've never hidden my general disdain for the rise of the "Souls-like" sub-genre and for me Hellpoint is a terrific illustration of the types of games that have taken on that moniker...

Hellpoint is another one of those games that wears its Dark Souls inspirations proudly but doesn’t understand what exactly makes Dark Souls so beloved. It struggles to forge an identity for itself, while also not doing any of the main Souls mechanics as well as other games. It does, however, have a certain rough charm hiding within its bleak sci-fi corridors and behind its many, many hidden doors. If you’re a glutton for smacking evil stuff around and getting lost then Hellpoint might be worth buying after a price drop.

Dark sci-fi Hellpoint sits smack-dab in the centre of soulslikes quality-wise. It's not terrible, but it's far from a good one too. Should you wait for a price drop, and a couple of fixes for its technical issues? Frankly, no. The strong atmosphere and cryptic plot have the capacity to provide the incentive to endure the many flaws and keep on playing, but aggravation and plain 'ol boredom will soon ruin everything. IF still willing to try it out, stay away from the Switch port, as it is the worse one yet.

Hellpoint tries to incorporate familiar concepts you've seen from more popular action titles such as the Souls series. Unfortunately, it also adds various ideas that turn it into a jumbled mess. Combined with cryptic presentation of information, confusing level layouts, clunky combat, and abysmally bad platforming mechanics, it's one game that you'll say "Oh, hell no" to.
