How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Mewgenics took me completely by surprise. Despite my great fondness for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, I didn't follow McMillen's subsequent projects closely. However, when I accidentally found out about this game just a month before its release and saw how much potential it had, I knew I had to check it out. Fortunately, I was not disappointed. Mewgenics is an excellent game with a huge amount of content, engaging and multi-layered gameplay, and stunning audiovisuals. It is a game that will stay with us for years to come. I have no doubt about that!

I am having an absolute blast with Mewgenics. Even after playing for over 30 hours, I can tell I have only cracked the surface of what the game has to offer. Like many roguelikes, the game’s difficulty and design demand many playthroughs and hours to build up your arsenal of resources and personal skill to beat the entire game. There is a genuinely impressive number of enemies, items, and ability synergies that are incredibly satisfying to discover. I’m looking forward to exploring new areas, experimenting with new ability combinations, and breeding new genetically monstrous kitties for many more hours. Based on how addicting Mewgenics is, I have a feeling I won’t be the only one.

Fun, fresh, frisky, and almost fathomless tactical roguelike that could be fairly called a modern indie classic.

Mewgenics has so much that its sluggish meta-progression feels designed to get you to see as much of it as possible, albeit at the cost of satisfying pacing. Even when you’re technically earning something new on each new run, the goal remains nowhere in sight.

Mewgenics is a game overflowing with charm, supported by a fully authorial identity and a sharp, acidic sense of humor, something longtime fans have come to expect from its developers. Its turn-based strategic combat may feel simple or even limited during the first few hours, but as the gameplay unfolds, it reveals a unique depth, largely thanks to the roguelite system applied to the cats’ abilities and passives. Over the course of my 62 hours of gameplay, only one aspect truly bothered me: the length of the incursions, which can easily exceed 50 minutes. Even so, this "issue" can be softened by increasing combat speed to 2x or even 3x. Mewgenics stands out as a pleasant surprise of 2026, inviting players to experience firsthand the mystery and freedom of the nocturnal adventures lived by these adorable little cats.

It’s all about slowly learning the ins and outs of its systems as you play. Whether you’re sitting down for a single run or locking in for a longer session, optimizing your play style while uncovering new synergistic combos through passives is the special sauce that keeps you playing.

All in all, [Mewgenics is] as fun as a bag full of, well, cats. And about as purrfect as you can get with a mish-mash of strategy RPGs, roguelites, and breeding simulation that goes together like cat treats and cat nip.

A killer soundtrack and interesting game mechanics make Mewgenics worth the price of entry, but it overstays its welcome.

Like a sharp set of kitty claws, Mewgenics perfectly scratches the itch of ‘just one more round’ with an intriguing level of strategic depth, but one that never feels overwhelming. The randomised nature of things means it’s the kind of experience that always stays fresh, and yet at the same time is super easy to pick up and play, before realising several hours have passed. Add to that a killer art style that pays homage to McMillen’s previous entries, but has its own unique flavour thanks to the collection of cats, and a kick-ass soundtrack that makes those brutal boss battles worth playing again and again for the battle theme alone, and it is far from an outrageous bet to expect Mewgenics to sweep up a raft of awards and plaudits over the coming year and beyond.

A standout title that successfully balances both roguelike elements and SRPG depth. Its rough-edged visuals, offbeat black humor, and somewhat predictable early turn-based exchanges may pose an initial hurdle. Push past that, however, and you’ll find a rich playground of builds and combinations, where genetics, roguelike progression, and class systems intertwine to offer remarkable variety and replay value.

Mewgenics is satisfying, and I think the development team isn’t exaggerating when they say the campaign can last over 200 hours. Review copy provided by company for testing purposes.

"Mewgenics is a superb turn-based spiritual successor to The Binding of Issac, offering Ed McMillen's signature brand of crude chaos and roguelike excellence. Combat, presentation, and kitty gene splicing all come together to create one of the most engaging and addictive gameplay loops in recent memory. We do wish there was more control over breeding, and the game perhaps lacks the same punchy narrative undercurrent as Issac. But overall, this is a triumph, and could just be the sleeper indie hit of the year."
