How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Bright, technicolour visuals, punishing difficulty, excellent level design and tight controls are all hallmarks of this deliciously enjoyable sugar rush. Spinch is a short but sweet experience and one that certainly proves itself to be worthy of both your time and money. Although it's regrettably marred by early launch performance issues, Spinch is an otherwise wonderful platformer that we'd highly recommend to anybody who just can't get enough of the genre.”

“When I was in kindergarten I saw the movie The Yellow Submarine, and though I was far too young to really process what was in front of me it certainly left an impression...”

“If you find yourself longing for that old kaleidoscope toy you enjoyed once upon a time, Spinch's shotgun blast of color might help you fill that void.”

“Overall Spinch is a feast of colour and everything is so interesting to look at and absorb, but the game is very clearly designed to be difficult. The length between checkpoints is just too long, especially with much harder modern platformers using more forgiving checkpoint systems. Difficulty needs to be counteracted with speed, if every time the player falls into a pit they have to watch the camera scroll all the way back to their last checkpoint, it begins to feel like such a waste of time. Spinch is definitely a game for people looking for a challenge, and is not going to be easy to stick out if you’re someone looking for casual fun.”

“Spinch is a gorgeous psychedelic platformer that will both delight and infuriate you, aimed solely at an audience that eyes up the challenge and won’t relent until it’s conquered.”

“Spinch is a trip - both the psychedelic kind and the "fall on your face" kind.”

“Spinch is a fun 2D platformer with psychedelic visuals. It’s colourful, there’s enough variety between levels and enemies. You can beat your high scores, The controls are tight, platforming feels good. The game looks and sounds unique. There aren’t any graphical options, which is a shame.”

“Thanks to precise gameplay and fantastic visual and sound presentation, Spinch projects itself as one of the most interesting independent games launched recently. Its natural difficulty and inconstant checkpoints can keep out more casual or impatient players, but fans of the genre and lovers of a good challenge should at least check out this adventure.”

“While there were some technical issues, nothing was game-breaking. I would put Spinch up there with Super Meat Boy on well-made precision platformers.”
