How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (Metacritic) | – | 86 | 24 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 97% | 92 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 87 | 10 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 99% | 96 | 12 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 90.7, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 6,539 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“HROT is a prime example of old-school gaming at its finest. It distinguishes itself by not merely emulating the likes of Quake, Duke Nukem, and other iconic titles, but by forging its own path. The game skillfully incorporates elements of socialist hyperbole, seamlessly blending it with its dynamic action-packed gameplay that is sure to captivate you. While there may be a few minor imperfections, HROT is an absolute must-play for enthusiasts of the boomer shooter genre.”

“Hrot's very final boss was a joke that didn't land for me after an unbroken string of ones that did, but otherwise it's pure boomer shooter excellence.”

“Approximately five hours of action-packed humour and style make it almost impossible to turn the game off with a clear conscience. The high-quality level design is accompanied only by a minimalistic soundtrack highlighting the horror elements, and the enemies bring the player to their knees not only with their satirical concept, but also with their corresponding difficulty. [Issue#328]”

“HROT is another name to add to the ever-growing list of great boomer shooters, one that boasts some solid gameplay mechanics, a rich and satisfying level design, and a peculiar atmosphere that brings players in an alternative version of 1980s Czechoslovakia that is both fascinating and fully able to stand out from the usual locations that we see in these kind of games. Sure, the game can be a bit "janky" sometimes, but its heart is in the right place, and overall, it's a well-made and thoroughly fun experience that most FPS lovers are bound to enjoy.”

“The perfect retro game, especially for Czech players who’ll instantly recognize many environments and even enemies. The gameplay is fun and, together with an original art style, will surely delight all of you who periodically return to classic 90s shooters.”

“Hrot draws from Quake, Duke and Blood but does it half-heartedly and due to the setting resembles the forgotten You Are Empty more than the aforementioned classics. It holds its own in terms of level design, but you can feel it was developed by just one person.”
