How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Although I feel this is the best Mosou game currently available for the Switch, there's not enough here to bring over any converts, especially those who played Fire Emblem Warriors or Hyrule Warriors specifically for the franchise tie-ins. And although I don't prefer all of the changes from the previous Warriors Orochi game, they've made just enough to make things fresh for fans of the series and keep them entertained throughout the game's robust campaign.”

“It's not for everyone, but Warriors Orochi 4's multitudinous hordes can be pleasurable to sweep through, despite the game feeling by-the-numbers in many ways. This is simply more, and while fans might be able to forgive the bland presentation, we'd wager that non-devotees would have a much better time with the Zelda or Fire Emblem spin-offs, with the characters, settings and accoutrement you know and love helping to temper the monotony when you're not quite ‘in the zone'.”

“Overall, with a cast of over 170 characters to play as, an absolutely insane amount of character dialogue and an equally insane amount of enemies to slay, Warriors Orochi 4 will keep you busy for hours and hours on end. The story mode featuring missions that take anywhere from 7 to 20 minutes each to complete results in satisfying battle sessions that are rewarding. Gameplay is excellent despite being repetitive hack and slash based since it is quite simply, incredibly fun and implemented in a non-aggravating non-grindy manner. The sheer number of characters each with unique weapons makes Warriors Orochi 4 a must buy game for fans of the musou game genre and is quite easily one of the best fun games of 2018.”

“It is so difficult to recommend Warriors Orochi 4 right now when the series has made a name for itself through re-released games with added story content, characters and modes. Why would this title be any different? The main story is an enjoyable enough ride for hack and slash fans, but that's really all there is to it (unless you have an online subscription and want to battle with friends). Just wait for the inevitable ultimate edition in a year's time.”

“Warriors Orochi 4 is a disappointingly cheap sequel. Stripped back and basic, it feels like a quick and easy apology aimed at fans who were left disgruntled by the dire Dynasty Warriors 9. There's still enjoyment to be found here, with the series' trademark action holding strong, but poor presentation and unstable performance drag the experience down. Koei Tecmo really needs to get its Warriors games back on track, but until that happens, you're better off nabbing the far superior Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate.”

“Warriors Orochi 4’s offering of a massive roster and the ability to use magic in combat makes for a fresher experience that fans of the series will enjoy though it's repetitive nature still lingers for those who aren’t fans of the series’ signature element of taking down entire armies on your own.”

“The story is take it or leave it and Warriors Orochi 4 isn't too welcoming to newcomers in general. If you are a fan of the Orochi games and have a need for this on the go, I guess the Nintendo Switch is the only way you can go. However, in every other instance, there would be other versions of the same game I would recommend more.”

“Warriors Orochi 4 is just another Musuo game with improved gameplay, additional features, and more characters to choose from. Still, it gets boring and tiring to play in the long run if you’re alone, and I’d just put this in my gaming shelf until another player convinces me to play it together with me. I still had fun though, don’t get me wrong.”

“The honest truth is that despite being a lot older, Orochi 3 is the game I'd prefer to play over Warriors Orochi 4. It feels more fully featured, more well-designed, more interesting to play, and it has a more interesting cast. If you're burned out on Orochi 3, then Orochi 4 might give you a nice fix. It's not a bad game, just a very by-the-numbers entry in the series. Fans of the franchise will probably get their usual enjoyment out of it, but there's little to strongly recommend it over most of the recent Warriors games.”
