How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 80 | 39 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 77% | 72 | 1073 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 62 | 114 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 74% | 70 | 601 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Last Epoch may not have a AAA brand name attached to it, but the level of optimization and content found in the game takes it beyond what most AAA developers deliver today. While a lot of players are already comparing it with Diablo 4 and Path of Exile, it may not have the complexity level of Path of Exile, but it easily overtakes Diablo 4 in my eyes to sit below Path of Exile in the top three ARPG spots. The accessible skill trees, diverse classes to play around, and tons of loot keep things interesting long after you have completed the main story. I would appreciate it if Last Epoch received more Endgame content in the coming months, but even if it stays the same, there is enough to keep you busy for tons of hours. If you are tired of Diablo 4, jump into Last Epoch, and you will have a solid time exploring dungeons, collecting loot, and creating some epic builds. Highly recommended for ARPG fans, even if you are just curious to explore this genre.”

“Let's just say that with all that's on tap here and experienced for 20+ hours, I'll be sticking around for this timesink.”

“Last Epoch delivers an innovative ARPG experience with exceptional build customization and accessible crafting, bolstered by its refreshing time travel mechanic. However, a weak narrative, limited character customization, and repetitive endgame loop somewhat hold it back.”

“All in all, Last Epoch is a decent experience, but nothing more. We particularly appreciate the customization of our characters' abilities and the management of the numerous upgrade systems. On the other hand, the game never manages to shake off the impression of déjà vu it leaves us with. The insipid narrative and its generic bestiary, but above all the game's inability to make us feel competent and powerful, mar our desire to play again. Both in the short and long term.”

“Eleventh Hour Games proves with Lost Epoch that greatness can be attained through perseverance, passion, and a clear vision. From the get-go, the game stands shoulder to shoulder with the best in the ARPG genre. It offers hours of high-quality entertainment, featuring deep character progression, diverse gameplay systems, and plenty of fun and challenge. Lost Epoch delivers everything you'd expect from this type of game and more.”

“Last Epoch is a quarter-view ARPG designed for genre enthusiasts who may have grown weary of games that are either too easy or too difficult. While the game proves itself by providing immense core gameplay built over its five-year early access, the unstable online server and the worst-ever Korean localization hinders the overall experience.”

“A versatile build system allows for experiments with deep skill trees and unusual crafting mechanics - but after the initial excitement of creating those builds, momentum fades. ”

“Last Epoch is an impressive aRPG that features a web of interconnected systems and activities. The game's time in Steam Early Access served its purpose and, rough launch and some rougher edges notwithstanding, it delivers a smooth and enjoyable experience. Not as simple as Diablo 4, and not as complex as Path of Exile, Last Epoch has something for everyone, from the casual dungeon divers to the minmax lovers ready to chase that elusive stat.”

“Last Epoch's few flaws come from it being the first project by an indie team. These include long loading times for maps, server overloads causing wait times to log in, and missing translations and some bugs. But beyond these issues, the game is very rich and extremely fun, reminding me of the excitement of playing Diablo-like games for the first time.”

“With its emphasis on crafting and trading rather than action, Last Epoch puts the cart before the horse.”

“All things considered, Last Epoch is in a good place a couple of weeks after its launch. With the launch issues mostly in the rearview, EHG can now focus on fixing bugs, sifting through player feedback, and putting together a plan for the future. I’m not a Traveler in real life, so I can’t tell you exactly what the future holds for EHG and Last Epoch, but I suspect that Last Epoch will be the go-to ARPG for many gamers. Will it become the best ARPG of all time? Maybe, maybe not, but I doubt that Last Epoch is just the next Steam flash-in-the-pan success that will be forgotten in a few weeks. No, I believe Last Epoch has what it takes to withstand the tests of time.”
