How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“In the end, despite a few drawbacks, Octopath Traveler lives up to the hype of the throwback style of gameplay. Allowing players to choose one of eight characters is an interesting concept. Giving players the option to choose which character to add to the party also adds a great deal of strategy. Visuals, as well as music, are both great. They managed to do exactly what was set out to do: make a modern JRPG with retro aesthetics. Long time JRPG fans or even newcomers should certainly take the time to play this game.”

“Octopath Traveler is an atmospheric game with unusual graphics, which suffers from a number of strange design and story solutions, as well as problems with interface and many minor flaws. There's also a lot of grinding, and that's may be a big dissapointment for many gamers. If you are not against grinding, try Octopath Traveler.”

“Octopath Traveler brings together the best from classic JRPGs and modern visual style. Well written characters and stories, diverse world, thrilling turn-based combat and a great soundtrack make this lovely title that pays tribute to it's inspirations. Only weaker interaction between party members leave something to be desired.”

“For a game whose title seems to promise a winding journey of deep and dangerous discoveries, Octopath Traveler goes out of its way to put you on the most predictable and comforting of paths.”

“Classic-inspired gameplay, an orchestrated soundtrack, and a unique approach to storytelling make this a game that you won’t want to miss. This is an absolute must buy.”

“While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.”

“Octopath Traveler's choice to break away from the norm and explore an open world JRPG hybrid was a bold move, and while it doesn't quite come through the other end unscathed, the game does do a great job at keeping you engaged.”

“Octopath Traveler really is a love letter to the JRPG’s of old. It’s story narrative isn’t as strong as some of the classics, but it’s branching storyline, customisation options and complex, strategy based combat system provide a ton of fun and will keep you engaged for a long time, whether you decide to do one playthrough or many.”

“It's hard to imagine it going down as anything other than a true classic both for Square Enix and for Nintendo.”

“Octopath Traveler is an extremely satisfying storytelling experience vastly different from other traditional JRPGs out there. The eight stories followed over the course of the game are all compelling in different ways, and each is engrossing in different ways. The combat is simple, yet nuanced, and building party compositions never stops being a fun exercise as the adventure presents each new challenge. The pacing does have some small missteps here and there, especially as the world opens up between each major act, but it's a tiny hurdle in an otherwise magnificent experience.”

“Octopath Traveler is the magnificent missing link between pixels and polygons. It is game full of nostalgia with an incredible art direction, deep and addictive combat, a soundtrack worthy of the Squaresoft legacy and a lengthy although somewhat disjointed story line. If you are an old school player that enjoyed a classic JRPG , this game is definitely made for you and you will appreciate immensely. If you are new to the genre, it is a great opportunity for you to get to know turn based combat games, pixel art, and understand what all the fuss is about.”
