How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Loyal fans of Sapkowski and CD Projekt RED will be pleased to visit familiar places and battles from the books, but for an ordinary player the storyline will seem like a pale shadow of The Witcher 3 and its additions. Mew's journey is interesting in some moments, but still it cannot be compared with the adventures of Geralt.”

“Apart from the fact that combat is resolved by placing cards into rows as opposed to moving units across a map, there's little difference between Thronebreaker and similarly hand-drawn, resource-gathering, unit-upgrading games like Heroes of Might and Magic and The Banner Saga. If anything, Thronebreaker offers a deeper strategic experience, given the distinct feel of these custom-crafted battles, with their special victory conditions and unique cards.”

“While utilising the ruleset of a more traditional CCG system might put off some players, the on-brand approach to turn-based combat in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is still a positive addition to the world. Because with such an involved and intricately designed story, and such an interesting world to explore beyond the confines of Geralt, Thronebreaker offers the opportunity to lose yourself in the Continent like never before.”

“Thronebreaker is a great solution for players that value amazing story and beautiful graphics over everything else. Despite some minor gameplay issues and unrealized potential of the game, players will have a lot of fun. If you miss the world and lore of The Witcher, it's definitely worth to check this title.”

“Thronebreaker gives those into the card game a good opportunity to test their skills and earn a few new cards and bonuses, while also offering an interesting way for those more into the narrative side of The Witcher the chance to enjoy more time in the world, though it never manages to portray the best of either element.”

“Thronebreaker is CDPR's first non traditional RPG. The studio knew how to capitalize their abilities creating an interactive narrative experience with a cativating plot and characters, and a deep, well designed card game as its core. However, I noticed a bit of difficulty on creating significant consequences or adversity imposed on the player, unable to make each playthrough feel different from the last.”

“The characters are layered and sympathetic; the twisting, turning plotline engaging; and the moral dilemmas fascinating in their unintended consequences.”

“It may not be a terrific port, but Thronebreaker is a wildly addictive and relentlessly entertaining RPG-lite. The version of Gwent herein is the most fully realised to date, taking the core mechanics of previous versions and refining them into a malleable card game with endless potential. A beautifully written story and compelling characters make this a must-play for fans of The Witcher.”

“Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales features some of the sharpest writing on PS4, and it's all embedded within a superb story stuffed with brilliant characters. Meanwhile, Gwent makes up most of the gameplay, and although the card-based system does have flaws, it's easy enough to look past them when the surrounding journey is so masterfully told. Ultimately, Thronebreaker is an easy recommendation for Witcher enthusiasts and fans of strategic RPGs -- a surprisingly robust and rich tale that shouldn't be overlooked.”

“To really get the most out of it, you'll want to be a fan of Gwent, a card game that often gets ignored even by the most hardcore of Witcher fans. The story is worth the price of admission, but if you're not a fan of card-based combat mechanics this title is probably not for you. Thronebreaker certainly is fun, but it might be worth trying out a few hands of Gwent with Geralt back in Witcher 3 to make sure your interest can be sustained for 30 or so hours.”
