GRID

Codemasters · released Oct 11, 2019

Auto Racing SimPCPlayStation 4Xbox One

Capturing intense moment-to-moment racing action, GRID returns with an all-new experience where every race is the chance to choose your own path, create your own story and define your legacy in the motorsport world. From the creators of the hugely successful DiRT and F1 series, Codemasters invites you to take your place in the GRID World Series and compete in intense wheel-to-wheel racing with the most iconic and desirable race cars -- current and classic, from GT through Touring and Muscle to Stock and Super Modifieds -- and in some of the world's most famous city streets, ovals and circuits. GRID captures every moment of the race, from the adrenaline rush of lights-out to the elation at the chequered flag -- and in-between, it's all action too. Incidents come one right after the other -- tight overtakes, bumper-to bumper scrapes and competitive collisions -- all heightened by rivalries, team-mates and a nemesis driver who will all either try to help or hinder your progress as you achieve your goal of becoming the GRID World Series champion.

How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

GRID is a very solid racing game that harkens back to the 2008 original in some important ways. The action-packed racing itself is great and often unpredictable, and the handling strikes that balance between arcade and sim wonderfully. However, presentation isn't really up to scratch, and it leaves the game feeling a little cheap. We can't shake the feeling that the pursuit of that GRID personality has only led to a game that's, perhaps ironically, struggling for an identity. When all is said and done, though, there's still plenty to enjoy here, and it's certainly one of PS4's better casual racing games where it counts.

GRID returns and reaches the finish line in triumphant fashion. Codemaster commitment to blend arcade and simulation elements is, undoubtedly, a winning formula that is only strengthened with the furiousness of the AI.

A fitting return to form for the GRiD franchise, especially given the five year gap since Autosport. Doesn’t take itself too seriously, so it’s a title anyone can pick up and play. Would be just as at home in an arcade cabinet as it is in the console under your TV or on your PC.

GRID is an enjoyable racing game for those who want to enjoy some close racing without worrying about camber angles. The market needs games like this to provide light and shade. I was hoping this new GRID would be a fresh start, but it's a last night's takeaway re-heated. I enjoy leftovers, cold pizza is one of life's great pleasures, but that doesn’t make the perfect racing game when the rest of the world has moved on.

Some of the finest simulated driving you can find on PC and console, but with a single-player career mode that’s not as fully fleshed out as you’d expect for the money.

Grid is an easy-to-play racing game that entertains on the track but disappoints everywhere else. The career mode is hardly worth the name, and the online mode only offers the most basic functions. Although, if you can't stand the realism you’ll find in most of today’s racing games and just want something fun to play, Grid might be the game for you.

A solid reboot of the popular racing series, which is strong when it comes to driving, but it suffers from lack of content and rushed development. The game could have used a few more months of development, so that even the biggest perfectionist wouldn´t have any issues. [Issue#299]

It’s more streamlined than the original in terms of team management and it’s definitely way too lean on tracks, but Grid packs fun, fast-paced racing into an easy-to-digest format. Sure, it’s unrealistic for the final race to be Prototypes jumping up and down San Francisco’s iconic hills, but Grid isn’t trying to be a realistic facsimile of modern racing. Hell, with throngs of spectators dangling over the Armco, if Grid were realistic the tracks would just be a sea of severed hands and heads. Instead, it’s a hyperbolic brand of high-contact, Hollywood-style circuit and street racing delivered with style and confidence.

There's a lot to love here, from GRID's expansive multiplayer modes to the game's ability to cater to your every whim and need. The lack of splitscreen multiplayer is disappointing though, as are the often lacklustre graphics and severely mediocre enemy AI.

Codemasters managed to create the perfect racing atmosphere, utilizing a top-notch driving model and excellent AI, but then they kind of forgot about everything else: the car pool is tiny, the Career Mode is non-existent, the team management is lacklustre.

GRID is, by and far, one of the best times I've had with a racing game. Thanks to a great mixture of arcade and simulation, with a wide variety of options to let you cater the game to you, it's suitable for everybody. Not only that, thanks to the nemesis system and AI race-master, as well as the 400 unique AI personalities within the game, each and every race genuinely feels different. Simply put, GRID looks, sounds and plays great and is arguably the best all-around game from Codemasters.

The game combines some of the core aspects of its predecessors, but fails to deliver a complete and exciting experience. It lacks content and variation and gets old quick in comparison to other recent race games.
