How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| All-time Steam reviews | 37% | 43 | 469 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 28 | 121 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 59% | 59 | 300 |

“Unknown 9: Awakening is a game a couple decades too late.”

“Capabilities of Reflector Entertainment do not match the grand scale of the idea.”

“Unknown 9: Awakening feels like a missed opportunity. Although the game features an interesting story world and aims to bridge different media formats, it falls short at the most basic level. Instead of a compelling adventure, it offers a predictable story with flat characters, unattractive graphics, and frustrating gameplay mechanics. On top of that, bugs and technical issues make it hard to immerse yourself in a world that’s already somewhat hollow, one that tries to build an expansive mythology but throws too much at you all at once. This one didn’t turn out very well.”

“No amount of worldbuilding, which “Unknown 9: Awakening” has in droves, can make up for the fact that at the end of the day its main storyline is extremely predictable. Paired with a repetitive and unrewarding combat and stealth systems, its hard to recommend unless you want to take on pretty sights and gather (very well written) collectibles.”

“Unknown 9: Awakening is the perfect example of having great ideas, interesting lore, and well-written characters that are randomly thrown to the wall to see if they stick together. The plethora of technical issues is so large that by the time the game gets going, one's investment is long gone.”

“A below-average linear action-adventure that fails to deliver the full potential of its storyline due to an excessive focus on repetitive combat and numerous plot twists crammed into a short but tiresome campaign. Technically underwhelming and overpriced at launch.”

“For all of the ambitious transmedia gimmicks surrounding it, Reflector's first title fails to awaken any sustained interest due to shoddy execution.”

“With some truly interesting ideas and story at times, it is even more of a shame that it's the “game” part of Unknown 9: Awakening that drags down the whole experience. Worth a playthrough certainly, but also lacking in some fundamental areas for the era that has ensured this will probably be the last we see of Haroona and the hooligans.”

“If you're a fan of narrative adventures and are willing to forgive a few technical flaws, Unknown 9: Awakening still offers an interesting journey. However, for me, the game will be remembered more for its promises than its fulfillment.”

“Unknown 9: Awakening is a decent game that is mostly playable because of its interesting approach to combat. But apart from combat, there is no other quality that helps the game stand out. The graphics are only good for a few levels, but continue to be an average game from there. With the selection of games offered this year, you are better off avoiding this one for now.”

“If Reflector Games addresses the performance problems and refines some of the gameplay mechanics, Unknown 9: Awakening could become a worthy entry in its planned universe. For now, it’s a game best approached with tempered expectations, perhaps worth checking out during a sale or after a few more patches.”

“If you enjoy linear action-adventure games, Unknown 9: Awakening is worth a try. The game has decent character development, and while its stealth system and melee combat don't quite meet current standards, creative ideas can be implemented through the main character's magical abilities. Unknown 9: Awakening could have offered a higher-quality experience with some better optimization of the mechanics, but in its current state, it can still entertain you quite well for about 8 hours.”
