How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Phantom Fury could have been great, after another half a year of development and completely revamped final act. But now it is ok at best.”

“Bombshell Harrison is back in Phantom Fury, a new, more ambitious, bigger and more destructive installment loaded with details that show a lot of effort, but a loose consistency and rough edges that evidence a rushed development. As a result, Bombshell's new adventure leaves mixed feelings. Still, it is playable, although perhaps it would be good to wait for a discount to give it a chance.”

“Phantom Fury will undoubtedly disappoint anyone who expected a divine experience after seeing the first trailer, but it will please those who formed an impression of the final game based on the demo. Dreams of compensation for the never-completed and unreleased 2001 version of Duke Nukem Forever remain unfulfilled. However, we can play one of the most visually stunning retro shooters of recent times, which offers decent fun if we’re willing to overlook its shortcomings. That’s not a bad outcome at all.”

“3D Realms missed a great opportunity with Phantom Fury. Serious gameplay and technical problems drastically lowered the quality of a title that had the potential to be a good shooter. Luckily the plot and the artistic level save the title from a complete and much more serious rejection. Although Phantom Fury is a courageous title, it shows the consequences of the incorrect balance between graphics, narrative, level design and gameplay.”

“However, if you like to march through corridors, blow through your enemies, and maybe get a few one-liners in along the way? Phantom Fury is going to be a good time. It's a legacy throwback that has done its homework, and while it didn't delight me it also never made me want to throw the dang thing in the garbage. It's some good lightweight fun. Let's just hope that this time around the title avoids becoming the main character of controversy, hmm?”

“Phantom Fury attempts to be a love-letter to retro shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, but only ends up disappointing with its plethora of bugs, poor level design and frustrating enemy AI.”

“Phantom Fury needed more time in the oven. It’s certainly not that raw, but it’s not well-cooked either. Even if Slipgate Ironworks ‘irons out’ all the bugs, the game would still be an above-average FPS in a market dominated by nu-Boomer Shooters. Certainly not the sequel Voidpoint’s Shelly deserved.”

“Despite being a game with exceptional ideas developed by a talented team, the reality is grim: Phantom Fury debuts with fundamental design flaws amidst the crossfire of survival, Embracer Group, and layoffs during development. Unfortunately, it is a rushed game, plagued by constant errors and a hastily constructed third act.”

“Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison is back again to show the charm of retro action that continues to the present day. Dynamic FPS will not be lost among current competitors in the genre.”

“Phantom Fury is an engaging FPS, taking cues from early 3D shooters, such as Half-Life and SiN. For the most part it is well executed, having solid gunplay, a staggering arsenal of weapons and great level variety. It could have been an amazing experience if it wasn't for some pesky issues, primarily of a technical nature.”

“Phantom Fury is a fun experience from start to finish, with a great roster of weapons and plenty of exciting levels to blast your way through. It does have some noticeable flaws such as technical issues and a subpar finale, but the gunplay won't leave you unsatisfied.”
