How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 82 | 15 |
| Creator reviews (1 tracked) | – | 90 | 2 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 97% | 92 | 358 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 100% | 97 | 2 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.1, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 725 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Comedy games are considered notoriously difficult to pull off, but ones like this demonstrate that the challenge isn’t inherent to the medium - it really just comes down to how many people making games are actually good at comedy. Death of the Reprobate, with humor that’s sharp and dumb in equally amusing measure, is some damn good comedy - and maybe more than a little damned. ”

“As the final installment of the Immortal John Triptych, Death of the Reprobate provides more of the same fun Monty Python-esque humor, signature Renaissance-era aesthetic, and enjoyable puzzles that Joe Richardson fans have come to expect, even if some aspects are starting to wear thin the third time around.”

“I’m just here to tell you that The Procession to Calvary is the strongest. Four Last Things is in between. Death of the Reprobate is the weakest. Not by a measurable amount. In fact, based on this site’s rating system, all the games are getting the exact same rating, that’s how consistent they are in quality. But I’m a millennial. I was raised with the internet, and on the internet, we like ranked comparisons, so there it is.”

“The final stroke of a masterpiece triptych, as gorgeous as Four Last Things and The Procession to Calvary.”

“Death of the Reprobate is genuine highbrow buffoonery. With its biting satire, intuitive gameplay, and Renaissance style, Richardson has once again proven he can make profound statements about human nature while making us laugh at our own pettiness. Though it bears the common afflictions of the point-and-click genre, it nonetheless endures as a splendid finale to the Immortal John Triptych.”

“Fun, cheeky and irreverent, Death of the Reprobate prances through art history with a wicked twinkle in its eye, and is one of this year's most memorable adventure games. ”

“Death of the Reprobate is an incredibly silly point-and-click puzzle game which uses Monty Python-style humor and an art design consisting of Renaissance paintings to create a hilariously random experience.”

“I have been following the development of Death of the Reprobate for a while now, eager for more Renaissance silliness in my life. This could have easily been a disappointing game. After all, aren’t the third games in a series infamous for being terrible? But, praise be it wasn’t. Whilst I played through the game, my partner was sitting on his computer and would periodically look over bemused, as I sat at my PC snort laughing at something utterly ridiculous. Usually, this was due to a swear word in pretty script whilst a character was doing something equally vulgar. A true gift. So, what can I truly say to summarise the game? The storyline is funny. The art is pretty. The classic music is catchy. Altogether they create a juxtaposition of perfect absurdity. I have no other choice than to award Death of the Reprobate the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.”

“While Death of the Reprobate is not a perfect experience, this brief journey doesn’t overstay its welcome. I’m a Joe Richardson fan, and I can’t wait to see what he does next, even if it’s nothing like his previous works. Clearly, he’s a talented individual who deserves success. If unique experiences are your wheelhouse and you don’t mind some potty humor to go with your high-brow language, then please support this developer.”

“Death of the Reprobate is a delightfully devilish narrative experience that has you gasping with laughter at every interaction. The game forgoes challenge in order to provide the player with a seamless experience which is to its merit, but could do with a little less hand holding. Despite this, you really do want to stop and smell the roses when you play this game as its artstyle is a wonder to behold, and a bit yucky in other places. Its quirky characters and its use of the renaissance is unique and accessible to any player that doesn't have a degree in art as it prizes itself in how fun of a time you’ll have with it.”

“Death of the Reprobate is a whirlwind of madness, showcasing a parade of characters with no logic and questionable morality. The humor is, let’s say, quite unique, but it perfectly complements the distinctive graphic style typical of all Joe Richardson’s works. Perhaps the author is a bit too imaginative in designing his puzzles, but we’re happy to overlook that if it means getting one of the most entertaining and original titles of the year.”

“Death of the Reprobate offers both artistic complexity and simple humor. It’s a journey full of laughs, jeers, and disgust, and at the end of the day, isn’t that all someone could want from a trip to an art museum?”
