How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is a decent children's game that sags in the second half. However, it will still be enjoyable to play through in co-op on the couch.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is a faithful adaptation of the 2017 Horizon Zero Dawn game. The title perfectly and humorously translates the story of a serious adventure game into a blocky adventure that engages with entertaining dialogue. The gameplay also attempts to be close to the original title. While it succeeds in many areas, more experienced players may find some frustrating mechanics in the combat, especially if they choose to play them on the harder difficulty. In any case, LEGO Horizon Adventures is an excellent gateway for young players into the immersive world of Horizon and a fairly enjoyable one-piece game for adult players.

The Guerrilla Games franchise jumps to the blocks with LEGO Horizon Adventures, a visually striking title but that does not use the identifying characteristics of this type of adaptations. a technically delicious game with an entertaining story, but that in the gameplay is not up to the level of LEGO or Horizon. In spite of this, I think that the little ones will enjoy it without too many problems, especially if they play with several friends.

LEGO Horizon Adventures may have some flaws when compared to other titles in the LEGO franchise, but it fulfills its main purpose well: to entertain. The game is a great gateway for casual players and children to explore the Horizon universe.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is a charming, funny, and largely laid-back game with beautiful graphics that’s perfect for playing with kids. Fans of Horizon Zero Dawn will enjoy its humorous references, but due to its simple gameplay loop and high level of repetition, it’s unlikely to truly captivate many players.

LEGO Horizon Adventures struggles under the weight of expectation, whilst never managing to find an identity or audience of its own. Fun combat encounters and great visuals lose out to an otherwise shallow experience.‍

Which begs the question, who is Lego Horizon Adventures for, especially at its full $60 price tag? It's obviously tailored for younger players and for devoted fans of the Horizon franchise. Heck, I own the Lego version of a Tallneck from the games, too, but I wouldn't count myself among the core audience for this one. Lego video games tend to parody the mythos of their parent franchises, even if it's done in tame ways. They play as both a love letter and a limerick to the source material. But Lego Horizon Adventures feels like it only exists as an embellishment.

Clocking in at a fairly short six-to-eight hours, Lego Horizon Adventures offers up frequent, brief bursts of fun with its excellent combat encounters. However, this is wrapped up in an experience that feels way too shallow and repetitive to recommend to anyone other than the most enthusiastic Horizon and Lego fans. It's clear that the intention is to woo new, younger gamers to Sony's flagship franchise, but if you already own Zero Dawn and Forbidden West on PlayStation, we can't see any reason why you'd want to check this one out. Mind you, if all you've got is a Switch, then this endearingly light-hearted introduction will have to do for now. It could have been so much more, though.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is a pleasant little game that manages to impress in some aspects, such as its pretty graphics and fun gameplay, but fails to be convincing enough in other. Its biggest flaw are its repetitiveness and its overall lack of depth, and it fails to be as good as other LEGO games of the past.

I can foresee a future LEGO Horizon-themed toyline happening if this game gets loads of traction, but at the very least, this isn't poorly-made license fare. Guerilla and Studio Gobo did good work in making a co-op family game for all, and even moreso fun if you've played the Horizon games and see how they've adapted the serious storyline into a LEGO-fied concept. A fun experiment, in other words.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is not a game that will redefine the industry, but it is certainly an interesting experiment. If you enjoy LEGO games and Horizon, and don't mind occasionally unleashing your inner child, this game is the perfect blend of these two worlds. However, don't expect a deep story, challenging gameplay, or long-term value. Above all, this is an adventure for relaxation and occasional laughs, though not without some moments of frustration.

By lacking a sense of purpose or direction, it feels like Guerrilla Games & Studio Gobo couldn't be as creative with the license as they ought to have been; and, as a result, neither can you.
