How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a solid port of a great JRPG from more than two decades ago. It keeps what was special about the original - the story and the characters - and adds to it with new plot elements. While we weren't in love with the combat mechanics or the exploration puzzles, they don't get in the way of a great story. Just like we don't love everything about our family, we could overlook the game's shortcomings to focus on what made it memorable.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a dramatically improved iteration in almost all aspects. The only area where it disappoints is the sloppily applied AI filtering effect for the once-beautiful watercolour backgrounds. The wealth of new features, restored story content, and refined gameplay has finally made this classic PlayStation RPG all that it can be and more. The medieval German flavour and political intrigue with fantasy elements will make this a hit with fans of Game of Thrones, and gamers that felt disappointed by it when it came out will have renewed appreciation thanks to the gameplay enhancements.

I really enjoyed what they did with the title, especially in the gameplay department. The new additions and improvements really managed to elevate the game, bringing its full potential to action.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a title full of imagination and ambition that may seem difficult to decipher in the first few hours, but given enough time, it knows how to return your trust. Especially for those curious to explore the series, this version is a perfect introduction to the saga.

I love JRPGs. So I should also love “SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered”. However, I have developed something of a love-hate relationship with the game. The world's visuals and acoustics are unique, I absolutely love them. But I really struggle with the game's confusing story, vaguely explained combat system and unbalanced difficulty. I can therefore recommend “SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered” primarily to hardcore fans of the genre or fans of the franchise who are already familiar with its quirks.

A fresh feeling, flexible combat system tied to a series of dungeons that are thematically interesting but fundamentally humdrum. Special features and additions to this remaster that highlight its beauty, give better accessibility to weapon stocks, and give the tempo a much-needed speed boost, but feels incomplete compared to its remaster contemporaries. Ultimately, I had a gratifying experience playing this game in full and checking it off my bucket list, but it's a game which should be seen more as an incremental improvement and way to preserve it on modern consoles than something that's likely to draw in a new crowd.

For old-school fans, this is a welcome addition to the collection. It has everything you might remember, only better and more polished than before. For those curious about classic RPGs, Saga Frontier 2 represents an island in time that, for the first time, is more accessible than ever. If we can't have a full remake, then this is the next best thing. Especially if it's your first time with the saga.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered stands out for its deep narrative and visual style, although the language barrier makes it somewhat difficult to understand.

The complex combat system and menus are off-putting, the visual "upgrades" are lacking, and yet I still found myself coming back to see what's next. Saga Frontier 2 Remastered is a tough recommendation for those unfamiliar with the series, but its concept and storytelling method have undeniable appeal. If you can push through its flaws and steep learning curve, and perhaps partake in a little external reading, there's a solid game beneath its flaws.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered lets the best parts of the original game shine, while sanding out some of the rough edges that can detract from the player experience. The story shines as one of the best ones in the franchise, and the addition of new types of combat keeps things feeling pretty fresh. This is a full featured remaster, and I hope we continue to see the SaGa series get this kind of love and care from Square Enix; it deserves it.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is an unusual JRPG that has to inspire you to want to find out everything for yourself in order to really shine, because systems are not explained and without a guide you will definitely always miss something. However, the interesting battle system and the beautifully paced story are definitely worth experiencing for genre fans

In the end, for JRPG enthusiasts and anybody who enjoys complex narratives, tough fighting, and nonlinear exploration, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a must-play. The learning curve is high, and disappointments are unavoidable, but for those who appreciate its unusual design, this remaster provides a chance to explore one of Square's artistically ambitious works.
