How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

It’s the Watership Down of videogames, and I can only mean that as twisted compliment.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth creates an intriguing atmosphere, and despite its cartoonish art style, the environment draws you into its world. The combination of various items and enemies will keep you playing this entertaining game for hours on end, and the desire to improve will keep you coming back for more. We realize this style of gameplay won’t be for everyone, but if the game has piqued your interest even a little, we recommend giving it a try.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is one of the most addictive roguelikes we've ever played. It's the kind of game that might appear a bit rudimentary at first, but it becomes more and more compelling with each subsequent session. With unlockable characters and challenges, an insane number of weapons and abilities, and many other discoveries to be made, there are a multitude of reasons to keep coming back for another game. A few quibbles do keep Rebirth from even greater heights, but it's nothing that should deter anyone drawn to this type of twisted dungeon crawling, which works so well as a portable experience. Go ahead and bind Isaac to your New 3DS, just don't blame us should you disappear into the depths of his basement, never to return.

It's also worth noting that this is the second piece of software that's exclusive to the New 3DS, so if you're itching to get some use out of the thing, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is your only other option after Xenoblade.

Incredibly playable combination of twin-stick shooter and roguelike'iem. If you are able to accept unusual styling, you will be waiting for tens of hours of shooting tears at monsters straight from sleepy nightmares.

It is a spectacular, affecting journey, even if its destination is perhaps the creator's alone.

More weirdness, more blasphemy, and more great action makes this remake of The Binding of Isaac spectacularly absorbing.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth picks up on the legacy of The Binding of Isaac and improves on the original on its technical and content fronts to create a varied, interesting and challenging adventure game. Inspiration from the original Legend of Zelda is visible on Rebirth's level design but it won't just be Zelda fans who will appreciate this new chapter in the Binding of Isaac series. A new landmark in the growing sector of independent game designers.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth isn't a game for everyone, with its crude settings and heavy use of religious iconography. However, it's just about as close to a perfect game as we've seen all year.
