How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Sniper Elite 4: Italia is the most beautiful and comprehensive game in the series, which offers a well-executed sandbox, modern graphics and really interesting tactical gameplay. The problems with AI and hitboxes can ruin the experience, but there is hope that all issues will be fixed with the patch. But even in this state it delivers the engaging gameplay of cat-and-mouse with sabotage operations against superior forces of infantry and military equipment. If you liked Metal Gear Solid 5 and want more tactics and sandbox stealth gameplay, Sniper Elite 4 is the best option to buy.”

“Latest entry in the series copes with basic task, it's pretty fun and rewarding for a player to kill using a sniper rifle. Shame though that the story is boring, arsenal is pretty limited, and enemies' behavior is primitive. But the core sniping mechanic of Sniper Elite 4 can provide a couple evenings worth of entertainment.”

“Sniper Elite 4 is the best entry yet in this long-running franchise with great big meaty missions stuffed to bursting point with Nazis to snipe and stab in glorious slo-mo X-ray vision. There's a new-found flexibility to the gameplay, with Karl now able to shimmy and scurry vertically around levels and enemy AI that's much more up to the task than in previous iterations. There may be some slightly rough edges, with duff writing, naff characters and gameplay that doesn't change much from start to finish but, overall, this is playful sniper's paradise that lands on Switch in a truly impressive port. It's time to dust off that M1903 Springfield, find a nice vantage point and get to blowing great big bloody holes in fascist heads. The perfect antidote to 2020.”

“Sniper Elite 4 is a step back in the series. I don't think such open maps are what the game needs and the weapon customization, for some reason, has disappeared without any explanation or dignity. It's an enjoyable game, of course, but you can't expect players to buy a full-priced game just for the killcam. Maybe it's time for Fairburne to retire, or for the series to take its chances and evolve. How about a spin off in a modern warfare, as some kind of experiment? ”

“An excellent Sniping game. There’s stealth approaches as well as full firefights depending on how you approach tasks. The game also allows you to customize your experience as needed.”

“The Sniper Elite series has always been an interesting red-headed step-child off to the side of the FPS genre...”

“Going in it seemed like this was just going to be Sniper Elite 3 again but Sniper Elite 4 blows that game out of the water. It's such a complete package and one that feels so at home on much more powerful consoles that the absolute quality shining off this port easily puts it at the top of the war games available on the platform. Further highlighting developer Rebellion's fantastic work on the Nintendo Switch platform. Opening up the series to a completely new group of gamers who will hopefully love the brutal sniping action they have so sumptuously crafted. Don't sleep on this game.”

“You can shoot Nazis in the junk, across bigger maps than before, with more options and better AI. Were you expecting something else? Do you really want something else?”

“With Sniper Elite 4, Rebellion Studio may satisfy some of the fans of the series but compared to Sniper Elite III, This game has so many little improvements. Although the maps are bigger and kill cams are more violent the story, character modelling and music are weak and these issues prevent the game to be a great one. If we put aside the weak points, the way you can finish the levels and great weapons, make the game worth finishing at least once.”

“Enormous, open levels augment Sniper Elite 4 with some of the best long-distance shootouts that the series has seen thus far. The under-the-hood improvements, paired with the idyllic Italian backdrop, do give this entry the edge over its predecessor, but if you've played one of these games before then you'll know more or less what to expect. Nevertheless, as far as ball busters go, it doesn't get much better (or wince-inducing) than this.”

“Sniper Elite's argument is irrelevant and forgettable, its characters are poorly developed and the general appearance of the game is deficient;however, an outstanding level design and well implemented mechanics create a favorable and enjoyable game experience”

“Sniper Elite 4 takes its perch as the marquee, non-arcade sniping title on the market. Through its strategic gameplay, disgustingly explosive kill cutscenes, and jam-packed sandboxes, Sniper Elite 4 satiates the need for a World War II shooter, while not getting dragged down by the norms of the genre. Even with some technical hiccups and a less-than-likable protagonist, Sniper Elite 4 achieves, takes aim, hits its mark, and then some.”
